  1. Yup, 5...plan to have them for several years more. Have so much stuff on tape still, plus VHS is more universal than DVDs. VHS is also kooky and fun Plus it doesn't look *that* bad...some DVDs look worse IMHO. I get tired of seeing all the artifacts on DVDs. The way people talk about how bad VHS is, you'd think it was in black and white or something.

I like DVDs for the longevity of data (at least that's what they tell us), but personally I doubt general consumers can tell the difference between VHS and DVD on a regular NTSC set.

i've got 2, but they're in the attic with my tapes.. i've converted all my vhs and vhs-c tapes to dvd.

if i need to record anything from an analog camera, record something from tv, or whatever i just hook it up to my standalone dvd recorder.

life is a lot better without vhs, although it does rear its ugly head once in a blue moon, so i have to go to the attic and fetch a vcr.

I still have a couple working VCR around mainly because I don't have DVD recorder yet. Also got one hooked to my PC for tape to AVI capture. The last time I bought a new VCR though was probably back in '97 or '98 and it's still working today. When they blow up, they stay that way and I won't get new VCR as there's still very few VHS tapes I have not released on DVD yet and not converted to AVI on my PC.

I do hope to get all the remaining VHS done before 2006 rolls around. This VCR thinks the world was created Jan 1, 1996 and ends Dec 31, 2005 and I don't know what would happen by then. :P The other VCR I have is a cheapie 2 head that plays like crap and not good for vid capture.

  4. ive still got one, personally i never use it other than vhs>dvd conversions...its a rather nice JVC one, dunno the model number off the top of my head though.........im just waiting to get ahold of the godfather epic, that way i can buy it and convert it to dvdr myself, since it doesnt exist on dvd...and from my guessing probably never will......

Yes, I still use the VCR. My opinion on VHS is well documented but I'll say it again to save anyone from fetching my other posts...

VCR's are the TIMEX of home video... it just keeps on ticking. As DVDs make way for Blu-Ray and HD DVD, evetually they'll fade away for the fully realized 3d hologram machine, etc. ... but VHS will still be around, time shifting your regular TV programs for you.

  6. I'll be using my VCR's for a while, yet. They're quick and easy to use, not to mention, inexpensive. Having used VHS decks since 1980, I've accumulated too much tape to simply stop using the VCR's. Too many others I know still use VCR's as well. There's a lot of video I recorded many years ago that has never made it to DVD, and tape is the only means I have at the moment for viewing.

  7. I voted yes, because I haven't thrown it away yet. My little daughter just loves to watch movies and tv-shows that have been taped on a VHS for her older brothers several years ago. She is the only one in our 5-person household to enjoy this ancient device.

I have been using my LG, JVC or Xbox for several years for viewing and recording stuff on a discs. The other way I capture stuff from TV is through my tv-card. I definitely don't use a vcr for that. 8)

    Two S-VHS JVC`s and a VHS Sony.
The JVC HR-S9800U I use for capture, in conjunction with an
AVT8710 for VHS to DVD conversion.
The other two recorders are for casual viewing.

    Yes, this is so true.
When looking back my older VHS recordings I even prefer them often more then all those heavinly compressed TV-Channels of today.

Specially older flashy animation (MTV) stuff or sports looks great on my VHS recordings while on today' s digital it's often one blocky mess!

  11. As long as there are still VHS tapes out there (that I am interested at), I still keep my JVC VCR unit. I used it a lot to capture VHS tapes to PC for editing and authoring DVDs.
Maybe in the next year or two, VCR will gradually disappear ???

It practically has already. I was at bestbuy the otherday and walked down the dvd player aisle. There aren't any vcrs next to them anymore. I think the only thing they have left are the dvd/vcr combo units. As far as I know the other major retailers are also cutting back or eliminating them altogether.

  13. Well you can get a DVD/VCR combo for about $20-30 more than a VCR, so I figure these combo units are for the time being the replacement for the regular VCR.

  17. I do still have a working VCR, but it's used rarely. I do not record anything with it - it's hooked up, but NOT to my TV, only the output (for Video and audio) are hooked-up, no input), and the output goes first to a switching center (so I don't have to keep changing cables) then in to a capture card on my computer. It's only use now is to convert a VCR tape to a computer file, and use that file to create a DVD-R, or (S)VCD (but the straight media file is always saved in my personal archives before deleting it from my hard-drive (usually on a data-DVD)

    Both 15 years old.................
Why are ones and zeros so complicated? Linear Video Editing was easier. Downloading & streaming are two different things.

Yep. We keep it for capping the occasional rare movie that never made it to DVD.
