  1. Just started capturing video for VCD in Vegas 4.0. Got frustrated when it kept on cutting out after about 12 minutes, only to realise I was crashing into the 4GB barrier that Fat32 has. I know i'll have to get a new computer (eventually), but just have to do with what I've got at the moment, (slightly starved bank account).

Not really sure on reconfiguring my system, as I'm not really all that enthusiastic on doing a fresh install, so these are my two questions.

Are they any programs where I can capture straight away into Mpeg 4 for vcd or Mpeg 2 for DVD? So i bypass the process of playing around with HUGE avi files.

Does Vegas 4.0 have some controls that I can change, so it will break up a file while recording in avi format?

    Thanks

You can capture direct to MPEG-1 or 2 with software, but it takes a fair amount of processing power. The better way would be to use a hardware capture card like the Hauppage, but if you're short on funds....

Is that Belkin a USB capture card, or what are you using?

May not be a problem, but if you only have 128MB of memory, even with ME, that seems very low.

Really with your setup, AVI may be the best choice. Maybe Pic Video as a codec. At least your filesize will be a bit smaller.

  3. I'm just trying nero vision express now, and it seems to do what I want it to do, but I'm having BIG problems trying to get the program to capture from multiple devices. Although it captures the video successfully from the belkin USB videobus (rca to usb cable converter). Nero keep switching my audio capture back to the USB videobus, whilst really I want to capture audio through my M-Audio Delta 66. My Belkin USB Video bus is not a card of any sort. It is just a small box (about the size of a matchbox) that allows me to plug a video rca input into one end, and out puts it as a USB cable to the other end.

I'm going to tell you what you don't want to hear - if you had an internal video capture card, you wouldn't have this problem. I strongly recommend Hauppage. You would have to capture an awful lot of VCD compatible video to hit the 4 GB barrier. I haven't seen a USB video capture solution that wasn't crap and didn't have problems, but people love them because they don't have to open their PCs and they are cheap.

The Avermedia PCI capture card will capture direct to DVD files,so the 4GB barrier never comes into effect since the largest file it created is 1GB.
I've captured movies with mine under WindowsME without any problem.
Remember that 4GB barrier applies to singles files and a DVD's structure limits individual file size to 1GB.
I've captured DVD upto 8GB's with the AverMedia card in WindowsME.

I don't know about vegas, but I would imagine yo ucan tell it to break file a less than 1 gig. I your capture system really usb 1? I would be suprised if that can transfer that much data. There are a bunch of programs that can capture to files less than 1 gig (maybe all of them). The only software I know that produces good mpeg2 captures is windvr. But I would just use half the money and getr a pci capture card. Neweeg has a bunch for under $45. I use the leadtek expert for $45 and it works a charm. I used it on a machine a little slower than yours and it was great.
