I made a bunch of copies of films on DVD, havent done this a lot before. Tried them for the first time with a standalone player, and what surprises me is that the results are varying.
Some are accepted by the player and some arent. The thing is, they are all burned on Platinum DVD+R discs.
However, one thing that surprises me most is that one of the films (Hercules in New York) came out without sound! I can see the picture but hear no sound. I think this was a stereo-only disc originally.
Most of these discs were ISO copies and the player is a philips DVD951.
Is this a common problem?
I thought things either worked, or didnt.

just becaues it's called "platinum" doesnt mean anything.. fry's electronics sells a brand of dvd-r & cd-r's called "great quality", but they are known to be shit quality..
as for your varying results, it could be attributed to the disc's you're burning to, maybe your burner, or even your dvd player.
find out the media ID of your dvd-r's.
as for not getting sound on the one dvd, is it using DTS audio? -
Lumis' post is excellent, but I have a few more thoughts.
You said nothing about your DVD player, but I suggest you look it up in the DVD Player list here at this website and see if your player does better with DVD-R. I have an old Apex player and while it will play DVD+R, it is picky about brands. It doesn't care what brand of DVD-R disc it sees.
I wholeheartedly agree that your media may be junk. I find with DVD discs that you get what you pay for. I bought some Memorex blanks once and I won't do that again. Out of 25 discs, 4 were unburnable out of the box. That is ridiculous. I have read plenty of stories of people who bought cheap DVD discs and then in a year's time, the discs were unwatchable.
You can use IFO Edit to examine your DVD with the sound problem and see what format the audio is in. Knowing that would be helpful in figuring out why you don't get any sound. Find the IFO with the movie and open in in IFO Edit and see what it tells you about the audio track.
