I made a mistake configuring my router, and under the LAN settings in the router settings window, I changed my IP address. Now I can't even access the configuration for the router. When connecting, Windows says "IP Address invalid" and eventually looks like it connects, but actually says something like "automatic private address" or something like this. I can't even access the router configuration, a la "192.168.1.1". I've tried pressing the reset button on the back.

Unplug the router for about ten minutes, then plug it in and see if that works.

Did you run the Internet Connection Sharing Wizard? That will set up Network Address Translation (NAT) automatically, no way around that. Reset your router (unplug like bazooka said, or there should be a reset button), set your NIC to Automatically Obtain an IP Address (aka DHCP) and Obtain A DNS Server Address Automatically, your router should provide this for you since you'll be using Private IP Adressing.

I have very little experience with cable modems, since I live in the boonies where's it's not profitable for the cable company to provide service, but a friend that has it said to set up a router, you have to connect all the ethernet cables and then reboot the modem, else the cable modem thinks that the computer is the only object connected, not a router.

If you're using DSL, feel free to PM, I can help you set it up since most DSL modems are also routers.

Every router I've ever seen has a "Restore Factory Defaults" mechanism that should restore all the settings back to how they were "out of the box". Check the manual, or alternatively google and scour the info on the web. Chances are that someone before you has had this very same problem at one time or another.
    If in doubt, Google it.
