I have Adobe Premiere Pro and I will be capturing from my camera, Panasonic AGDVX100a. I've got an external hard drive which is USB and Firewire compatible. What is the best way to capture straight to this hard drive? I've never edited footage from an external hard drive. Will it be OK to do this? or should i just capture to my C drive?

I would use Firewire for a external drive. Firewire seems to be able to sustain large data transfers like DV better than USB2.0. I just use WinDV for transfers.

You can't transfer directly to your external drive from the camera if that's what you mean. You still have to go through the Firewire card.

The external drive should be OK for editing. I would try the transfer and if you have problems, you could use your C drive.

If you have a regular PC and you have the room, can you add an additional internal drive? I use the C just for boot, then I have a 'EDIT' drive and a 'ARCHIVE' drive, all separate.

So, can I connect my camera thru Firewire to capture footage, and connect my external HD thru USB and set it to capture to the external drive? Or am I better off captureing to a folder on my desktop, then disconnecting my camera, and connecting the external HD to the computer thru firewire and transfer the footage from the desktop (or C drive) to the external drive via firewire?

I transfer DV footage from my camcorder using firewire to an external USB connected 7200 rpm 250 gb drive and it works PERFECTLY. The external drive is FASTER than the internal drive and free from ALMOST all OS activity. No dropped frames!

    1) Connect the external hard drive to your computer's USB 2.0 port and
wait for the OS to assign a letter designation (like E: or F:). Verify the
    drive in "My Computer".

    2) Open Premiere Pro and go to:
Edit -> Preferences -> Scratch Disks and change "Captured Video"
to the drive letter designation of the new external drive.

Connect the camera to your firewire port and start capturing to the new
    drive!
