Install the Divx Low-Motion codec perhaps ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Google fourcc vp31 and the first hit you get is http://www.fourcc.org/codecs.php , which says that it's the Theora Video Codec.
    If in doubt, Google it.

install latest ffdshow, enable vp31 and theora under vfw codec configuration(from the start menu->ffdshow) and under decoder.

hey thanks i did what u said, but i am still gettin the error, even after i enable the codecs. for whatever it is worth, i tried running the AVI through TMPGEnc and seeing if i would be able to get an MPG out of it. well when i drag dropped the AVI into the box, all that showed up was the audio box, the video was blank. does this mean that there is no video in the AVI? could that be the cause of this problem, a wrongly made AVI, thanks

Actually it says that it was the basis for Theora, not that it is.

Make sure that you enabled VfW decoding, not dshow. To be sure do it via the ffdshow config in the video compression selection of VDub(Mod).
