BEST Program for Picture Slideshow

I was wondering if there are ANY freeware or time-limited trial softwares/programs that are highly recommended for creating a picture slideshow where music can be synchronized with the pictures (so that the pictures do not have a designated switching time)

...As well as the ability to create text effects, where you could add the lyrics on to the picture with animation and a variety of techniques, fonts (etc.)

...I'd rather not use Powerpoint
Any Suggestions?

If you are running windows, look for a product called Impress. It can be found at the OpenOffice site (www.OpenOffice.org), free to anybody who wants to download. The product is freeware, and includes other office-type stuff. But remember, Powerpoint is designed to integrate with many Windows and Linux applications, while freeware may not. You might have to "test" the finished product on friend's computers for compatibility. Also, consider that some freeware apps choke on file insertion (sound, .gif, image and video files are automatically linked and loaded for burning to CD in MS Powerpoint). The MS Powerpoint viewer is free also, for opening other people's presentations.
