I have the latest version of Windows Home XP. Latest version of Nero.
    Pentium 4. 2 Gigs Ram. 2 x 200 gig HDs
ATI Theatre Pro 500 capture card.
    Pinnacle Studio 9

I cannot burn an AVI file with Nero to DVD

I get 3 or 4 different error messages

I have already burned these file to DVD before no problem. Now it won't let me burn them again to DVD, or any new captured video.

    I just re-installed Windows.

I can burn all these files no problem to VCD on regular CD with Nero
But I cannot burn the same files to DVD

Can someone help or pop around and shoot me in the head

    Thanks

    RE: NERO AVI BURN

Why did you re-install windows? If you are using Nero 6, go to the site and get the latest upgrade (free to registered users) to 6.6. If this does not fix the problem, check to see that .avi is supported in the DVD file registry (it should). If you have already upgraded, and Nero supports burning .avi, then list the error messages and re-post here for others to read...

I reinstalled windows as I am a newbie and don't know shite!
That's why I posted here. (In the newbie section)
I have the latest registered Nero. I have downloaded all the upgrades, and the patches
I have legit copy of Windows.
How do I check if AVI is supported in the DVD registry?

If you try burning an SVCD, and have success, but not with DVD, the problem may be a missing/invalid codec. Nero will send up a "file not supported" message if it will not permit you to burn within certain applications. I would say that's not the issue, however. The issue is that Nero wants you to recode certain files in order to burn them.

Nero had this to say about MOV files: "For SVCD to work with MOV files, you must have our MPEG-2/SVCD or MPEG-2/DVD Encoder installed on your system. These plug-ins have to be purchases separately. If you would like to purchase one, please visit our online shop for information and pricing".

If you are not able to make a readable DVD from certain files in Nero Express (.avi, .mov, .mpeg, etc.), it is because Nero or Nero Express does not support burning them. Nero Express only will work with VOB, IFO or BUP file formats to create a DVD. Those formats can be created with Nero Vision Express which can convert AVI, MPEG, or MPEG-2 to VOB, IFO and BUP format structure. But, you may need to have the DVD Encoder installed for this conversion.

Thanks so much for the reply.
O.K. this is what I am doing.

Capturing VCR tapes to Pinnacle Studio 9
Pinnacle outputs them as an AVI file.
Now..... at one time Nero burned them all.
I downloaded the package today from Nero
I captured another VCR tape with Pinnacle and saved it as an AVI file.
Nero would not burn it. It says it doen't contain a video file.
BUT I was able to burn one of the other AVI files on my HD that Nero refused to burn before with the same error message.
I sometimes get a message saying Nero is not comaptible with my version of Windows XP. I have the latest version of Windows XP with SP2 and all the updates

It's frustrating when you have $$ invested in a program, and it gets buggy. I too have Nero, but I actually don't use it to burn .avi. The encoder offered by Nero should permit you to convert the .avi file to something else, that even Windows will burn. I don't think the problem is with the .avi being produced by Pinnacle. The problem is Nero recognizing the file. Open NeroVision Express2 from the start menu. Under 'What would you like to do', move the cursor to 'Make DVD', then over to 'DVD-Video' or 'DVD-Video(VR)'. At the bottom of the window you should see a message: "The MPEG-2/DVD Plug-in has been detected and installed on your system. Your video files will automatically be converted during the burn process". Once you select which of the two DVD's to make, go to Add Video Files, and select which you want to burn. IF YOU DON'T SEE IT, Nero does not support burning it, and won't open it, unless you have the .dll files in Nero's folders.

You may have to convert the file to something else to be able to use Nero to burn it. Check this:

    https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=786#786

Or this article here: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=279717&highlight=avi+mpeg2 (This subject is "Creating a DVD"). I hope this helps. If not, try browsing this sites "CONVERT" guides.

I personally save everything to MPEG2 or 4. Try burning an SVCD with your saved .avi files. Verify that the MPEG-2/SVCD Encoder is properly installed. The plug-in self installed when you downloaded it. The files VMPGEnc.dll and VMPG2Enc.dll have to be in the Nero directory (Program Files>Ahead>NeroFiles).
To test the plug-in, simply launch Nero, select the SVCD format and ´New´. Drag and drop an AVI file into the SVCD compilation window. Nero detects that it’s not MPEG-2/SVCD compliant and asks if you wish to ´Turn off standard compliance and Continue´, ´Re-Encode the Video file´ or ´Cancel´. Select ‘Re-Encode the Video File’. If it begins encoding, you can be sure the MPEG-2 Encoder did indeed install correctly.

I have a different problem in that Nero 6.6 crashes on my system while trying to burn an SVCD to CD-R. I can burn data files, DVD-+R, +R DL, etc. but it no longer will do SVCD. Hopefully the new 7.0 version fixes some of these bugs as well.

Well, the work around for the non burning SVCD Mpeg-2 seems to be to make a bin/cue and burn from that. I made one in VCDEasy and it burned just fine and plays fine. I just wonder how they let these kinds of errors creep in when they are supposed to have people testing their products and not the end consumer...

  9. nero itself will not work, you need nero vision. you can also find an older free version of VSO dixvtodvd, that works well and is fast, i'm just not sure if you can still find it.
