After lots of trouble I can finally successfully rip a DVD to my HD then encode using DVD2AVI > TMPGenc. My settings are typical XSVCD settings - that is to say 480x480 at CQ (constant quality) 100%. I need to keep bit rate under 2100 so I put max at 1900 to leave room for the audio. I have the highest quality (slowest) setting chosen as well. The net should be a great looking XSVCD, right?
When I playback before burning (through PowerDVD) I notice that any motion has a weird effect (the area around the motion looks sliced while movement is happening). The scene I was looking at was not high motion so I shudder to think what a true motion scene would look like.
What is the highest quality setting here? Since this is a pure rip to encode I am guessing there is no codec at work, correct? The source (DVD) is as good as it gets so what am I doing wrong?
thanks,
mkirk

What does the rip look like before you encode it to XVCD with TMPGEnc? Is there blockiness there also? If so, TMPGEnc will not correct this. You would then need a better rip. If the rip looks good before using TMPGEnc, then look in the guides to the left to find some good settings.

try using the force film option in dvd2avi. i was having the same problem and this worked.

I will try "forced film".
I am surprised I did not run over that in the forums before. What are the other optimal settings in DVD2AVI? There's settings under video for "IDCT Algorith" and Color Space" which I've kept to default setting.
Thanks again... I'm ripping and encoding now so I'll let you know if the quality improves.
