    hello all
I have a rather strange problem.
    i have an IBM A30 laptop, 800MHZ, 1Gig ram, 128MB radeon video.
i would like to playback movies using QT player.
my graphics are weird as they act as if there is a loose cable to the display and become sketchy and garbled, but only during video playback and every other player except QT does this. this is the only player that plays back video ungarbled.
this isn't a software problem as i do regular installs, updates, complete formats etc. it seems that perhaps QT accesses different sections of the video RAM maybe.
QT will play the video part of DIVX encoded AVI files, but not the MP3 encoded audio.
is there a plugin for QT that will play the MP3 audio so i can watch movies without scrambling my eyeballs?
    thanks good people

Sounds like a codec issue. You should be able to get any of your players to work.

it's not a codec issue as i think QT handles codecs differently to other players.
i have, however found the solution to the scrambled video and that's by turning off overlay in performance options in media player.
can anyone tell me what exactly overlay is?

Quicktime does support mp3. I just tested a CBR and a VBR file. Both played fine. Doesn't seem to like mp3 in avi though and it really doesn't like it in mp4 (100% spec compliant).

Quicktime I think is just not a very good player.

Try mplayer or VLC. mplayer uses far less resources to.

Even though this thread really seems to have more to do with video playback than with mp3, I do know this:

QT should be able to (natively) play just about any mp3, if in a QT movie or alone. It does have trouble with AVI (incl. DivX), MPG (muxed system/program streams), or MP4, but I believe that has more to do with the demuxing than the decoding.
Note: QTPro won't (natively) export to mp3, but the feature can be enabled with Cleaner, ProCoder, Sorenson Squeeze, etc.

    Scott

(glad to hear you've worked out your troubles)
