I'm not sure if one DVD Recorder is supposed to record some more and then finalize another brand's of DVD Recorders recordings but I can with my JVC DR-M10 and Panasonic DR-M10. If I start recording on the JVC I can record more on the disc using the Panny and then finalize on the Panny. Once recorded on you can't go back to the JVC to record or finalize. It only works one way.

It's cool because I like the thumbnail menus that are created with the Panny. It also tells the disc to display the menu upon insertion which I like. The JVC finalization creates a plain menu with no disc title or thumbnails and does not come up on the screen when you put in the disc.

MY QUESTION IS: If the Panasonic finalizes a JVC recorded disc will it keep the 720x480 resolution you get at SP or will it make it into that 704x??? size that Pannys create? Thanks!

I believe the new Panasonic is 720x480 also.

  4. KeepItSimple: Am I correct in assuming that the the Panasonic model you refer to is the DMR-ES10, not DR-M10?

I'm very interested in your post. I have both a JVC DR-M30 (which I would think should behave like the DR-10M) and a Panasonic ES10. I record almost exclusively on my JVC using DVD-RW media for later re-mastering on my PC. Even before reading your post I had tried several times to take a DVD-RW I had recorded - but not finalized - on the JVC and play it in my ES10, with no success.

Does your "burn on JVC - finalize on Panasonic" trick work with both DVD-R and DVD-RW media? Or just DVD-R?

I've only done it with a DVD-R so far and it works great!
OOPS yes it's the Panasonic DMR-ES10 and the JVC DR-M10, not to be confused with the Panasonic DMR-E10 or JVC DR-M100 , but IT IS confusing 'cuz the numbers are too close even within the same brand!! What's a guy to do?

  6. KeepItSimple: Thanks for the fast reply to my question.

Tonight I'll record a DVD-R in my JVC DR-M30 and see if I can read - and finalize - it in my Panasonic ES10. If I can, I'll be extremely happy.

Like you, I prefer the Panasonic menu/finalizing results over that of the JVC. Also, although I am extremely pleased so far with my JVC DR-M30's recording quality - I've only had it for 3 weeks - for some reason during the finalizing process my particular JVC unit almost never breaks the program into chapters; of the 30 or so DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs I've finalized only ONE ended up with chapters. I don't know if it is the fault of the media I use or if it is a glitch in my machine itself. (Are there any settings in the JVC to establish/change the size of the chapter time "steps?")

So if I can go from my JVC to my Panasonic it would no only provide me with what we both agree is a more sensible DVD menu struction but also solve my chapter problem. Here's hoping!

Withe the JVC unit it all depends on how you structure your files before writing. What I mean is that the JVC will only allow 8 clips to be written at one time if you go this route:

Dubbing ----> Dubbing Mode -----> select your clips (only 8 max). In this case the clips will all show on your top menu.

If you have more than 8 clips for burning to a disk and you use the Create Playlist method, then the individual clips do not show up on your top menu. But the breaks between your clips are maintained. So you can use your remote and press NEXT and it will jump to the next clip.

    Hope that makes sense.

  8. KeepItSimple: It works!

A DVD-R I recorded in my JVC DR-M30 could be read - and finalized - in my Panasonic ES10. This now gives me much more flexibility when recording programs and will enable me to create a more appealing menu on my finalized DVDs.

I'm grateful for your heads-up on the compatibility of non-finalized DVD-R's (but not DVD-RW's) going from a JVC DR-M10 (or DR-M30 and possibly other models) to a Panasonic ES10 (but not Panasonic -> JVC.)

Just like the tip that the Panasonic ES10 could be used as a pass-through processor to "magically" fix many stubborn sync problems, like flagging, when transferring videotapes, this is the kind of "undocumented feature" that I'd only learn about in videohelp forums.

    Many thanks!

Well, it doesn't work in reverse. The JVC DRM10 does not see an "unfinalized" -RW from the Panasonic ES10.

Does anyone know if you can record on a JVC and finalize on a Pioneer? Is there a good reason to consider this?
