  1. I have a 30 minute mpeg video clip burned on a cd that I play in Windows Media. The picture quality is fair. But I wanted a VCD to play in my portable VCD player because my VCD player will not play raw mpeg video. I used Nero Express 6.6.0.8 to burn a VCD. But this VCD when played in Windows Media has a noticeably worse picture quality than the original mpeg disk. Is there a way to make a VCD (from mpeg video) that does not have reduced picture quality? My version of Nero is bootleg, could this be the reason for the reduced picture quality?

Holly Crap dude don't you know you are breaking forum rules by mentioning " My version of Nero is bootleg" That is WAREZ
You want to get us shut down??

Re-encoding and MPG will allways reduce it quality. Is that MPG also downloaded?

And not it doesn't matter how you got your NERO.

  3. My mpeg is recorded from the cable tv. (I don't have a VCR.) I am in China and bootleg software is as common as a bowl of rice. Nobody buys legit software because it is not available. You can buy the latest copy of Windows, Photoshop or whatever for under a dollar at the corner candy store. That is just the way it is. I've been here since 1997 and nothing has changed, regardless of what you may hear on the news about piracy. They also eat dogs and cats. I've seen whole skinned dogs hanging on hooks.

Great, but the fact is that it is not allowed to be discussed in this particular forum. Many other groups are being looked very closely scrutinazing their content so they can attack them at a drop of a hat.

To answer you ? It is not that it is a bootleg, You probably captured the MPG at a larger relolution than VCD standard that I believe is 352 x 240 I could be wrong. That in itself will cause it to appear lower in quality. Also when you re encode an mpg it also tends to degrade. Only a non lossy format like uncompressed AVI will not degrade but it is HUGE. Many many gigs per hour.

I understand your situation where you live, I work with 90% Chinese nationals and they tell me the same thing.

Do you think that Nero might be re-encoding your clip? That could result in worse quality. If your burn takes more than a few minutes, like 30+ minutes, Nero is re-encoding it. To stop re-encoding, Nero will tell you that the clip is not compliant and you simply turn off compliance checking. If Nero isn't re-encoding, then maybe your clip is not as good as you think. If you watch it on a PC in a small window, it will hide imperfections. Watch it in full screen mode and see if it looks pretty crappy. If so, you have the old "garbage in, garbage out" problem.

Two things to remember on the forums here -
    1) NEVER say that your software is bootleg under any circumstances. Your post will get banned soon enough for you saying that.
    2) I would discourage you from saying that you are burning a downloaded file as some might take that as a violation of forum rules as well.

Try authoring with VCDEasy. No risc for your source being reencoded. If the mpg isn't VCD compliant, VCDEasy will tell you so, but try to author it anyway, should you choose to do so.
