How do you convert a word document with embeded jpeg pictures into a format for a DVD that will play on a DVD player like a powerpoint presentations/slide show. Is software available that will convert this type of files to the above format or would the word/jpeg data have to be converted to some other format before burning the DVD ???

Think of it as an opportunity to do a sereies of screengrabs.

Make sure margins work out to title-safe.Temporarily reset your screen resolution to 800x600. View in either Normal or Page-layout or even Web mode (see which looks best) and there should be a "full-screen preview"-type mode which is best. Set your zoom to either 100% or "Page Width". Capture a screen-at-a-time (using PAGEDOWN)--probably won't be page-at-a-time unless your page is formatted as 4x3 landscape. I guess you could do a videograb and have the page be "scrolling", but that's probably overkill.

Or, there's an easier way. Make a powerpoint presentation, with animations and everything. Save it as a gif.

Use Ulead gif animator (free trial available) to open the gif and save as either an avi or mpg (it gives you the choice).

That's a good alternative, but conveting to PPT will change the formatting quite a bit.
Also, doesn't make sense to make a GIF from something that contains a JPG file--gonna lose alot of color variation.

True, it might change the format, but since it's coming from word, it's compatible. You can easily edit text or pic placement in ppt, plus set up your slides and use animations. Plus, what if you do the screencaps of each frame then realize there's something you want to change? You can't edit jpegs (the text I mean).

You're right about the colour depth though. Gif animator will only go as high as 256 colors which is fine for drawings but not photographs unless you are willing to lose some color quality. (I just tried it with some photographs though, it doesn't look THAT bad.)

Choose: save time or save quality of pics.

I have the pictures in seperate folders and the word document in a seperate file. I have 514 pictures in seperate folders sorted by year taken which I want to put into/onto a DVD formatted disc.

This project is about my Dad & his life from 1918 to present. The pictures are the ones we had taken during his life & the family. They are in groups that were stabled onto a sheet of notebook paper & then the sheets were scanned into the computer. What would be the best ???

    Re: Photo Slideshows

    Try these links here:

Don't forget Powerpoint can be burned to CD within windows, with retained links and files, in a semi-compressed format. It takes alot of .jpegs to fill out 698 MB of CD space!
