    dear guys

this is my first post here, so lemme start with a warm greeting to everyone there !

i have a philips dvp-642 dvd player and have a couple of problems that i wanted to ask about and see if anyone has some suggestions (solutions) for me. before i get to the problems here is my dvp version and firmware info

    DVP 642/37 Firmware: 0531 E 1

    1) problem-1: the player does not allow me ffwd or rewind xvid videos

all i see when i press the rew or ffwd button on my remote while playing xvid files is a "hand" symbol at the top left corner of my screen. it does not ffwd or rewind . any idea why ?

here is the information i used to burn the xvid videos:

    media used: memorex 12x cd-rw
    burner: liteon-52x
    software: nero burning rom 6x
    nero settings:
    disc-at-once (finalize)
    mode-2 cdrom/xa
filesystem iso9660 (no joilet and all other options unchecked)
    level-2 (max 31 characters)

    sample xvid video basic details:
    size: 252MB
    audio: 128kbps 44.1khz ac3 CBR
video: 834kbps (no QPEL, no GMC, no BVOP, no NVOPs)

    2) problem-2: some xvid files play with a pixelated fashion. this disappears once u press and release the "system menu" button but then the audio is out of synch

any idea why this is ?

any suggestions or solutions to the above problems are greatly appreciated as they have been driving me crazy for two whole weeks...(

    thanks a lot in advance.

    best regards

I'm not sure about the desynching, but you get blotchy pixilations with earlier versions of xvid. If you encode your own video files, make sure you have the latest xvid (you want at least xvid 1.03).

I've had a few files that don't allow fast forwarding or reversing, and I think it might be caused by a not so perfect burn in regards to the burner or media. Memorex is a very good brand so that's probably not the problem.

If this is happening with all your files, the problem might be with your particular dvp642 in that it has trouble reading discs properly.

Many people don't know that even though you can't ff or rw some broken video without keyframes there is a goto time option on the remote.

    Press display
press rw or ff once to move the invisible pointer to the time input area
    press time 00:10:00
    press play

This will bring you to timepoint 10 minutes into the movie

You must enter the leading zeroes but the last 2 (seconds) are optional

    e.g.) Timepoint 1 hour and 2 min would be 01:02 or 01:02:00
If you enter 1:02 or 1:02:00 without the leading zero it won't work

btw) the : are already set on the display you don't have to enter them.

This is handy to go back over a portion of the movie or when you want to watch the rest later. Just press display to get the current timepoint (or look at the player display window) and when you come back later enter the time you want when the movie starts again.

    dear guys

thanks for the information. i will try the rewind stuff and let you know. as far as the xvid goes i think you might be right about the keyframes. also i think dvp does not handle BVOP/NVOPs properly and produces pixelated stuff on those videos

    thanks again.

    best regards
