    Petrol prices are sky high.

I was in the queue for couple of hours last night. Managed to filled up a full tank, it was chios out there. People rushing to fill up their tanks.

With petrol prices risen to £1 per litre, protests are scheduled to be held from tomorrow (wednesday) silimlar to the one in 2000 in the UK.

Protests against the Government's tax on fuel are to be extended, campaigners have announced.

In a dispute which could bring widespread disruption across the country, demonstrations are now set to be staged across three days, from Wednesday until Friday.

Refinery protests and motorway go-slows have been threatened - and campaigners revealed even the major port of Dover could be targeted.

The lobby has been sparked by the price of petrol at the pumps, which has reached £1 a litre after rising more than 20% in recent months and threatens to be forced higher by the disruption caused to the US oil industry by Hurricane Katrina.

Campaigners from the Fuel Lobby have given government ministers until Wednesday to meet them to discuss their grievances or face protests. They want to see an immediate reduction in taxation to bring fuel prices down.

Previously the demonstrations were proposed for Wednesday, but Andrew Spence, spokesman for the Fuel Lobby, said: "The plans have changed now.

"It is on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in different parts of the country."

He said the changes had been prompted by the popularity of the protests, and would also now coincide with the fifth anniversary of the original demonstrations, on Friday.

The 2000 protests witnessed refinery blockades, and brought Britain to a standstill. As yet, there has been no sign of long queues, and Mr Spence has urged against panic-buying by motorists.

Previously, he said he had been contacted by truckers in France and Spain who were planning their own protests in sympathy with Wednesday's demonstrations in the UK.

yep, I saw it on the news the other day and I'd filled up before all this daft panic started. I'm in no rush as I've still got a full tank and I've always got my bicycle

  5. I pulled in to BP today. Since the start of March (when I bought my car) I've only been using the premium fuels (Ultimate, Optimax etc.) but I saw the price and was forced to go for standard. 103p/litre for Ultimate. Ridiculous.

Not to say that I'm annoyed. I'll just think of the money I'm saving, I suppose...

  7. From completely empty? £64.89 ($118.36) - the most I've squeezed into my car is 63 litres. It's only meant to have a 60 litre tank, but I suspect it has five litres in reserve. That's a huge fuel tank for a 1.5!

that is a big tank and you must be able to do some miles between fillups. I only get around 300 miles for £50

Modern cars have a recirculation system in place where fuel is constantly mixed up in the tank. Further to that, they have a fuel filter to stop anything that might slip through from entering the engine itself. No need to worry about rubbish getting in.

From what I understand, though, fuel starvation isn't good for engines. I didn't actually mean it to run that low, but there you go. I get an average of 38mpg (mostly driving in town) so my fuel tank is good for about 500 miles.

VCDHunter - I am in agreement with your subtle choice of words. Why panic buy? Nobody is going to run out of fuel - that's just not good for business. They'll only run out if people panic buy... Wait... That means I won't get my top-up! Nooo! Right, off to BP!!

There are half a dozen local pumps to fill near where I live. 5 of them ran out of fuel on monday night, expect one, which the queues were enormous (where I filled up waiting almost 2 hours).

The funny thing is, the next day, it was all back to normal, business as usual. I was pissed off that I waited so long the night before

force of habit I guess , mine may have a circulation system but it's 10 years old now but even so I don't want to change my fuel filter regularly

@waheed, better safe than sorry. I remember during the fuel protest I was lucky as I had a full tank and then found a station that only had a 20 minute wait when I did need some

I'm BP also so I can get my nectar points

  16. That is a beautiful colour. If I got to choose the colour of my car, that would be it. Maybe a little lighter (0.8M CuSO4.5H2O @ 298K to be perfectly exact). Nice car, too.

As for fuel filters, they never need replacing. No idea why - maybe they filter so little out anyway that it's just not worth it.

    718? lol you've lost me

I can recall my old 1975 Mark 1 ford Escort that had a fuel filter that caught loads of crap due to it's age but newer cars probably won't be prone to it unless you put crap in yourself

  18. Maybe fuel is just cleaner now.

I somehow mistook it for a BMW 718. It isn't, is it? I edited that out seconds after posting it - you must have arrived damn fast!
