  1. I just bought the 100 pack of DVD Cases from Meritline to find out there are no blank cover inserts. I dont care about printing or crap but I just need something to stick in there to write on. I cant seem to find any cheap inserts since the expensive printable ones are all I find. Any ideas where I can get some cheap crappy inserts to put in? thanks

  7. $17.99 for 20 inserts? I don't think that's what the OP had in mind when they said "cheap".

    What I do is make inserts in Photoshop and print them on plain old legal sized paper. It's not the best quality (considering I'm using photocopier grade paper), but they work well and they're cheap.

    Is there a template or anything you use for photoshop? Are you making the inserts or the actual cover? I am looking for a cheap way to get a cover in the plastic.

    Buy a ream of 8.5"x11" and something you can easily cut paper with. I have one of those swing handle type things (don't know what to call it) I got at Staples for like $20. Works great and the inserts are crazy cheap.

  11. I meant to say covers, as I never make inserts, as they're a total waste of time, IMO.

    I have a template that I had made myself, although you can just do a search for "DVD cover template" and you'll find many online.

    I meant covers also. Same difference. Standard case covers are smaller than 8.5"x11", so it works also. Most of the time I use a standard photoshop template and print to 8.5"x14" paper. Works well with my non printing to the margin printer.

  14. Have you ever tried to use this app before? It prints out covers pretty much to the standard specs of a dvd case.

    Just grab a big stack of regular paper and go to a OfficeMax, Office Depot, Kinko's or something. Use their papercutters...its free. Chop a whole bunch of them to size and your done.

    Just cut up a piece til it fits and measure it to get your dimensions to cut to.

    You don't need a template. All you need to do is select "Image Size" in Photoshop and set the size to 274mm x 183mm. If you have a DVD case that is a non standard size you can change the size as required.

    Why does everybody need a template? They still make rules, or so I thought. Measure one side, measure the other, and there you go.

  19. I use a template because it's set up with guides to help me position the spine properly, which makes creating covers easier.

    And.... ?

    Somebody once upon a time had to measure it out to make the template. And then ALL DVD CASES ARE DIFFERENT by a slight amount, so self-measuring is ALWAYS more accurate than a template by somebody else.

    That's not true at all. The front and back length and width are always exactly the same otherwise the discs wouldn't line up on the shelf. Why would you measure these each time when they never change? The only thing that ever changes is the spine width and most sites list the measurements for the cases they sell anyway.

    One can quickly and easily make a template for each different style of case so that they don't have to measure out and add in the line guides each time. And then there are plenty of places where you can get premade templates and it takes all of 2 seconds to check them for accuracy.

    Its not that you need to measure the case, those measurements are widely known, its that you've got to input those measurements including the spine line guides into your imaging software. So rather than do this same process each time you just do it once. Its just smart.

    I use a template I made myself, thank you very much.

    Yes, different cases can have slightly different measurements, but the difference is very little. I use an xacto knife and straight edge to cut them, and if need be, I'll trim a little extra off if needed. Unless I'm making a cover for a case that is a different size than my singles, doubles, triples and quadruples, the one template I made works fine for me.

    @adam,
    Different manufactures ABSOLUTELY have slight variations in the size of the window, as well as the EXACT size of the case. Some are a mm taller or shorter, narrower or wider. AlphaPak and Amaray singles, for example, not the same window size. A 1mm off may not sound bad, but it sure looks bad, almost like a shirt with the sleeves too long or too short. Sure, make your own template, based off your own measurements. I make a new template every time I get a new batch of cases that are NOT the same (identical) as last time, or from a different manufacturer. Most sites are not listing accurate information on case sizes. They put that up the first time the page is made, and it's never updated again.

    @non-linear,
    That's great. My post was more directed at the people that want to download everything and can't be bothered to pick up a ruler. Sounds like you already picked up a ruler, congrats for that.

    Pardon my interrupting the recreational arguing, but here are the facts.

    Each brand and style of DVD case DOES vary in size. Spine thickness is one variable. Another is based on how close to the edge the clear film is bonded. Some are bonded very close to the edge and others are bonded a few millimeters in from the edge. The insert is ONE piece of paper with ONE width and ONE height. The size of your insert takes into account all of the variables. This results in ONE piece of paper that fits properly or it doesn't. Lord Smurf's comment is exactly correct. If any of you don't care how your insert looks, be assured that none of us do either. Just slap any old thing you want to in your case. But please spare us your recreational arguing.

    SCDVD the only one arguing here is you, actually its much more like bitching. I told lordsmith that I disagreed because I did and I do and don't plan to discuss it any further with him.

    I've tried every size and brand of case on the market and there has never been any reason to adjust for anything other than the spine width. Pretty cool huh?

    a simple solution to the variations in cases issue, is only buy one brand. simple.
