  1. Hi all,

i am new and having trouble sorting through encoding and compression (not sure of the difference and function) and how its done. All I can do so far is convert a small Final cut Express project to a quicktime file, then burn through IDVD. However, I am trying to move on......a few questions

Are quicktime (.mov) files the same as Mpeg2 files ?

If not, are there free, downloadable programs that can convert 2 hours worth of quicktime movie to Mpeg2 ?

once converted, does the converter create a brand new file ? with a .mpeg2 extension (or something like that ?)

Much appreciated and thanks in advance as I need a little bit of handholding on this.

    Um... No.

There are plenty of definitions of video related terms there.

You can use a program called tmpgenc with the mov plugin to convert it to mpeg.

You might want to read this guide - https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?link=75 . Or, you can use the how-to menu to the left, choose convert, and then choose "mov to dvd" in the format conversion field.

  4. Um... thank you, Yoda. I have already been to the glossary a few times and while it is very informational and gives the definition of those file names, the whole process is still a bit murky for me.

Also, i cant get TMPGENC to open...i think its a windows only program.

As far as converting Quictime files to Mpeg, then yes, the above posters are correct..Read up on the guides..

But to answer your earlier question, i'll push you into the general direction..
All video has compression (audio and video)..
A .mov file is a container for different compressions..(Mac)
An .AVI file is a container for different compressions..(PC)
An Mpeg file is a compression unto itself..The above containers support editing. Unlike the above containers, Mpeg is usually a final format that's not very "edit friendly"..

DVD's require MPEG2 video compression for compliance..

    Good luck!!!
