I am doing some editing work for a friend, his camera is an ntsc camcorder dvd. ie: he has a mini dvd disk that the camera records onto. the files are 'vob' files, meaing they are dvd files. I have looked at toast, and although i don't know much about it, it seems to be dvd 'burning' software, not copying software.

The bottom line is i need to extract certain footage from the disk so that i can put it into the show reel i am making. On a pc i can do this easily with a number of programs such as procoder and dvdshrink. On a mac which i am not familiar with, i have only be able to find 'mac the ripper' now for it to work it shouldn't be shutting down every time i try to rip something from the dvd.

if anyone can help me out i would be in your debt.

unless you know of another mac program i can use, that will convert the 'vob' files to 'avi' for use in final cut pro

Don't convert VOB files to Avi--Final Cut Pro won't like them.
Convert either to DV stream, or at the worst, QT .mov.

    look here:
    ffmpegx,
just substitute "DIVX" with "DV Stream".

Its not freeware , but inexpensive..
    CINEMATIZE..does exactly what you want
It marks in and out points within CSS-FREE vobs and creates either a NEW STANDALONE FILE (in MPEG-2 or some lesser compressed file)
    or a Quicktime Refrence MOVIE

Caveat: you must have quicktime pro and the mpeg-2 quicktime component installed for cinematize to work

Note, if Mac The Ripper will not put these files on the Harddrive first, try

The QuickTime MPEG 2 component is not needed for Ciinematize 2.x as it has its own video decoder.

  7. toast 7 can do this for you.

you can browse the DVD and select individual titles or chapters, and then convert into DV for editing and/or reburning to a new disc.
