  1. Sony showed new HDD DVD recorders on the IFA in Berlin: RDR-HX717 and RDR-HX919.
    Features:
    - record to HDD (160/250 GB) or DVD+R(W) (DL) (not to minus media!)
    - EPG (Guide Plus)
    - settop box control (G-link)
    - live cache function (6 hours)
    - progressive scan output

I think, that looks very similar to Philips recorders. Does Philips now build HDD DVD recorders for Sony?

  4. Bad design on Sony's part. This is about as bad as those Blu-Ray burners coming out, that can't read/burn CD-R's.

How did you come up with that? Blu-ray players can read CD's as well as DVD's. As for burning em I'm not sure, but what DVD recorder records CD's? (I pressume you mean audio-CD's cause who on gods earth would still want to burn VCD's ) )

EDIT: i see you talking about burners not recorders, so you're right, and that's just moronic that these things can't read CD's...

  9. ummm..........reguarding VCD'S....there's still reasons to use them (backing up VHS tapes, for example...okay, svcd would be better for that...but still cdr media....i also use cdr media in my dvd player to play divx files....now given, the blu ray players may or may not be divx compatable, but its just kinda another one of those things that proves that cd's and cdr will still be around for a while (so will dvd's and dvdr, imo..i have a gut instinct it will take a LONG while for a standard HD format to come out on top...and when that happens, it will take even longer for the prices to come down to a range where people will actually WANT to buy them....

EDIT: reguarding the BURNERS (pc based ones) that dont read/burn cd...what in god's green earth are they thinking??? how many games/programs/operating systems are on cd based media? i know this discussion is primarily about the set top ones...which is kinda stupid because i know a lot of people that use their dvd player as their main cd player as well....someone NEEDS to tell them to fix their stuff before they actually release it like that and wonder why its not selling......

I do VCDs more and more those days.

    The Reason?
I collect music videos and cartoons. I spent much time and money for my hobby.
Then, a relative cames, a friend, or your current girlfriend, sees what you got and "want it". You can't say no of course... It is not polite.

So, I made what they want to VCD. They NEVER ask for a second one (I made awfull VCDs for a reason....).

I also do VCDs when I mix music videos (like others mix music). 80 min per CD with near VHS like quality, is not bad for something like that.
In a way it's like those tapes I use to record a decade back, when I use to be a DJ on local clubs...

  12. As usual Sony finds ways to alienate potential buyers. None of my 3 Toshiba players can handle "+" media, so I have spent my money on hundreds of DVD-Rs instead. In my experience, Sony products are overpriced and are of inferior build quality. I have at least 6 Sony products that have broken prematurely. Recently, my Alpine car player stopped playing the latest Sony branded CD-Rs! Arrggghhhhh!!! (I guess I should have learnt a lesson from this and stopped buying their products after the 2nd or 3rd purchase).

    Beta, Elcaset, MD.....next!

Don't know if its too late to post here but I have trouble playing "-" media recorded in my Liteon 5005 in two Sony players.

Regarding recording, the 5005 can record to VCD and SVCD as well as audio CD. I use it to record TV shows to CD RW media and watch later on a DVD player (too cheap to use TIVO). I hope this wasn't already covered earlier. I didn't see it. The CD RWs do play in the Sony DVD players.

    Sony has new management, right?

Are they trying to sink the company?
Maybe they're creating a distraction while they steal money?
Are they tired of being number one?
Your miserable life is not worth the reversal of a Custer decision.

  15. Beta, Elcaset, Mini Disc, root kits, etc., etc. Sony is a joke. Avoid their products and be a happier consumer.
