  1. Hello...

I have a new JVC DR-MH30 DVD recorder just out of the box, and to make a long story short, the setup button on the remote doesn't bring up the setup screen.

My original reason for trying to get to setup was because I was having a problem with connecting the unit via S-Video, but ultimately as part of trying to troubleshoot it I've gone with an RCA cable, but either way it won't go into setup.

    - I have tested the S-Video cable from my cable box to the TV directly, so it shouldn't be a bad cable.

    - The remote can change channels (which I needed to do to get to L-1), brings up help, it ejects, etc., so it's not a bad remote...unless the setup button happens to be broken.

    - When I tried just a plain movie DVD, it played fine.

JVC tech support said that I should send it for service, but I have a funny feeling that it may be something that I've overlooked. Any ideas would be a huge help. Thanks!

Which Model do you have is it the MH30US model? Make sure the TV/CABLE/DBS/DVD switch is set to DVD. Then the setup menu will appear, once the setup button is pressed.

  3. Hi, I am in the US. That switch was set to DVD but thanks for the idea. Really that's the odd thing, the rest of the buttons on the remote seem to do their job except for setup.

    Got this from the manual:

If the remote control doesn’t work properly, remove its batteries, wait
a short time, replace the batteries and then try again.

  5. Check the IR LED whether it lights up when pressing the setup button. Use a digitcam/camcorder to make the IR LED visible.
