    Hi guys,

I am trying to create a 3 hour dvd (to fit in 2 dvds, so at normal encoding...to fit 120 minutes in each disc). Anyhow, I just want to estimate how much hard drive space I would need to store a 3 hour MPEG-2 file. Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

    Hi rain88,

The size of an encoded file depends on only two things: it's running time and the bitrate used.

So, a file with three hours of video where the video is encoded at 4,000kbps will be half the size (nearly - there are other minor factors) than 3 hour footage encoded at 8,000kbps.

If you're putting it to 2 discs, it's probably fair to assume that you'll aim to have the highest quality possible, meaning higher bitrates - enough to fill both discs.

    As 1 disc is approx. 4.35Gb, 2 x 4.35 = 8.7Gb. So, I'd say 10Gb to be safe.

Use the bitrate calculator given above.

Next time ask how long is a piece of string - maybe then someone will write a calculator for that
