  1. My brandnew philips dv642 is making a ennoying clicking sound when reading(playing) cd,dvds. Is this normal. Its a brandnew player, it seems to be region free and plays pal out of the factory, is this normal, or someone returned it before me.
    Thanks

Does the Philips make a clicking sound with all DVD's or only those encoded with data such as DivX files?

  4. I don't understand why people buy this shitty DVD play.crappy quality, and on top of that it comes only with 3 months warranty so its not build to last for more than 6 to 8 months(I know there is some lucky owners out there).

  5. It makes this ennoying clicking sound with every media.
(Last poster) There is no other divx player available, at local stores.
    Thanks

  6. I tried upgrading the firmware. And that clicking noise is still there. Is it a bad dvd player, or all of them make this noise. I can hear the noise while watching the movie really ennoying.
    Thanks

Mine makes a faint ticking sound from the tray area when playing but I never noticed it until I checked.
I have to put my ear 6 inches from the tray to hear it. Further than that and I don't hear it. My Philips is near my computer so I haven't done that with any of my other brand players so don't know if they would be the same.

Not very likely that a firmware upgrade would have been any help. It sounds mechanical and probably normal at low volume but yours sounds extreme.

If it's that bad return it for an exchange.

I've never noticed any clicking (or any other) sound from mine, but since other people seem to have it, I just played a dvd, and even with my ear on the case, all I can hear is a faint whir, kind of like a very small fan.

Mine makes the clicking sound too, but it always has. I've had it for over a year and it still works fine.

The reason I asked is that my Pioneer makes a clicking sound when playing CD's but not when playing DVD's. To the best of my knowledge that is because CD's rotate at constant speed but DVD's rotate at variable speeds.

Here's why, number 1, a lot of people dont use the lousy RCA connection that is where you are getting the idea of bad picture quality, as soon as you wire it up through an S-Video or better, the picture quality improves TREMENDOUSLY.....secondly there's not a whole heck of a lot of other divx compatable dvd players around, so the choices are kinda limited.......and lastly, ive known SEVERAL people that have had this dvd player for a while.....

Mine only makes this noise on crappy media as it attempts to find the starting point of the Divx/DVD files. Never does it on good media.
