I just hooked up my sony vaio computer to my tv and tried recording something. the computer comes with dvgate software which i used to import the sample that i recorded and convert it into an avi. well the problem is that the imported mgeg2 file was 229 mb and the output avi file was 1.4GB and i only recorded 6 minutes. how do i make a whole hour long tv episode into a manageable file size?????

You can use virtualdubmpeg2 and convert the mpeg file into divx or xvid. use a bitrate calculator to determine the file output size.
