  1. My buddy's computer broke and he bought a new Dell which came with XP home. He purchased the full version for his older computer that had Windows 98. He obviously had to register it. He said if I sell it for him, he would give me half.

    My question is:
    1. Can I sell it even if it was regiestered? What preparations would I have to do to sell it (unregister?)

    Thanks

There is also the question of activation, as whoever purchases it will have to go through the activation process, which will raise questions with microsoft. I would carefully read the EULA to see if resale is permitted.

it can be done, but it's going to be a bit of a hassle.

what will probably wind up happening is that the person whom you sell it to will install it and probably find that they cant activate it.. at which point they can call microsoft and they should activate it.

but i know microsoft will let you transfer activations.. as long as you only keep it installed on one machine.. so say for example you had a 400mhz pc when xp came out, but then you decided to to upgrade & went out and bought an 800mhz barebones system a few months later.. you could install xp on it, but you'd have to call microsoft and have them activate it for that machine..

they might give you a bit of guff, but keep at them and they'll activate it.. but i wouldnt tell them that it has been sold.. just say you're the original owner, you just upgraded your machine significantly.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe if it was a FULL RETAIL version of windows xp that he put on the old computer then that is transferable. IF he bought an OEM copy of windows then that is suppose to be tied to the one computer and i believe not transferable.... Microsoft would be the one to ask but you might not like their response.

I bought a retail version of XP Home and have transfered it on MANY machines. I always make sure its only installed on one of my computers at a time but everytime I call to activate it, I never have any problems. And we are talking like maybe 20 computers I have installed this on. I flat out asked them that as long as I have it on just one of my machines if they would still activate it and they said yes.
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0
