    i want to add subtitles to a movie that is an avi but i dont want to re-compress to mpeg or to avi again. i just want to keep the video but add the subs. i also want to play it on a Philips DVP-642. thanks a lot for all of your help.

  2. Use VOBSUB on the computer. Use SRT format subtiles on the DVP 642. No need to re-encode or mux anything.

    the file is an XVID and when i use vobsub to mux it just makes a 200kb file.

  4. There's no need to mux anything. Just give the video file and the subtitle file the same name (except for the extension of course). VOBSUB will automatically display the subtitles on playback. Same for the DVP 642 -- although I think you have to press the subtitle button on the remote.
