alright..is there a free app i can get that will allow writing to a CD-RW from the Windows (emulated DOS) command line?

I used a program a while back that had to compress it to an .iso and then would burn..it was a big .bat file that erased the cd-rw, compressed the files to an .iso, then burned to disk..it worked well except for one problem...it didn't support long filenames! I'm looking for something easy I can incorporate into a .bat file to copy the files on D:\pworks to the E: drive (CD-RW drive). Someone suggested using nero console at one time but when looking through it's "help" for the switches it was just a big jumbled mess.

I'm comfortable with making .bat files and switches galore, but nero was unreasonably complicated.

Anyways..all I want is some utility (preferably free) that can handle long file names and erase/burn to a cd-rw. I'm making a backup utility for someone and would like for them to just be able to click on one file and have the rest of the backup automated for them.

    any ideas?

also it doesn't have to be a console application, I just haven't found any program that will do this incredibly simple task (free of course)

Look for Cdrtools in this page: http://bootcd.narod.ru/index_e.htm

Or check for windows options underthe Supported Operating systems section of this page: http://cdrecord.berlios.de/old/private/cdrecord.html

You may have luck with some sort of Linux utility. Some of the newer version can read a partition formatted as NTFS.

Knoppix can read a NTFS partition, and it's available as for use as a bootable CD. It's made by Konqueror (spelling?).

Not that it's affecting the answer I (or hopefully any other member here) will give you, can I ask why you insist on the command-line?

it doesn't really have to be command line driven..i was just wanting to make an additional copy of the data to another hard drive for even more fault tolerance and it would be easy to add that line in a .bat file.

I really just need to make a jolly little icon that can be clicked on that will automate the process of erasing/burning a certain folder to dvd. I tried in nero and saving the session but if anything is different about the folder the next time you run that saved session it doesn't do it automatically..this is an undesired result...I'll try the cdrtools.

I had the whole process working before from the command line with a menu to either backup or restore from cd-rw but as i said previously the .iso file writer only supported 8+3 filenames. Once again...command line really isn't a necessity...something that automates the process is.

thanks for the replies so far.

I'm pretty sure that there's a file called dao.exe that a lot of "GUI for CLI" programs use.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I am not much of a techie, but I use a bootable cd/dvd created with BartPe that has plug-in for nero

Boots to a xp inviroment using memory (ram disk). This allows me to backup whatever is needed/wanted from the system hard drives including os files.

While I have not tried to automate anything, I would think someone with a little more savvy than myself might figure it out without to much problem
