  1. I am attempting to convert an avi file to an mpg file, and every program that I attempt to open the avi in sees only audio, but no video. When I play the original avi file I get perfect audio and video. Why am I losing the video when I try to re-encode this thing into a mpg? Thanks in advance...

  3. This may sound stupid, but the file plays just fine as an AVI, shouldn't that mean that I have the right codecs installed? I can/have played a million mpg files in all kinds of iterations, I don't understand this one... *sigh*

    Hi

Sounds like your AVI is compressed with the new DivX 4.02 Codec, they are difficult to edit with most programs, it should convert with TMPGEnc but if you need to edit the AVI you may need to re-compress with Vdub to an older codec like Fast motion or Ms V2,3,4

  5. The video won't convert in TMPGEnc, all I get is audio conversion, but video stays black screen. Virtual dub gives me an error when I try to re-encode it. Any other ideas?

try a direct stream copy in vdub then encode the copy, sounds like you have some corrupt frames in the file, when this happens you can watch the avi but both vdub and tmpgenc will report an error during encoding, and in preview in tmpenc you will get a black screen. doing a direct stream copy usually fixes the file.

  7. Thanks for the suggestion sommersby, unfortunately I wound up with the same black screen after I tried to run it through tmpg... I know that this has to be something stupid that I'm not doing, that's what makes it even more frustrating...
