I was inspired this week by the devastation of the hurricane.

I'm backing up the digital family photos and will put them in a safe deposit box at the bank. And I'll give a copy to my sister who lives in another state.

This way if any one event happens there will be a backup of it. Not just the one sitting next to the computer.

Now if you have a large enough hosting package with a service provider you could also host your personal data there as a emergency backup.

It doesn't have to be a natural distaster to destroy data. Viruses or even a burst water pipe can ruin your pictures. And if you've been dilligent and scanned all of your physical prints than you'd even have more protection. I'm planning on doing that in stages over the next year or so.

Now I think I'll only update the safe deposit box backup once or twice a year to save the hassle. But at least there will be an extra copy.

Consider something like this. It supports up to a 300Gb disk...

Plug it into your local net and you have an attached storage device - plug it into a remote net and it can be configured as an ftp site...

I've got one at home and one in my office - so far so good (they're only about 4 months old)...
