A friend of mine sent me an AVI file (I believe it's a PAL). I simply cannot do anything with this file. Here's what I have used with the file and the results:

    1) Windows Media Player 9: no responsding.

    2) Jet Audio: no responding

    3) Quintessial Player: block

    4) AVI2DVD: 9.8 GB space required for a +700MB AVI, even I set up to convert to VCD only???!!!!

What can I do with this file?

What are you trying to do with it? Make a dvd?

    Have you tried tmpgenc?

Also you can use gspot to post the specs on it. Another option is virtualdub. It can try to scan for errors in the video/audio streams. Though virtualdub will only output in avi unless you frameserve it to another program like tmpgenc.

    Hi yoda,

    Thanks for the response.

I only want to play it. But none of the 3 softwares I used (Windows Media Player, Jet Audio, Quintessial Player) would open the file.

Then, I attempted to convert the AVI file to VCD, using AVI2DVD program. However, the program indicated that I would ne +9-GB space. I just wonder why so much space is needed to convert a +700-MB file into a VCD.

At this moment, if someone can suggest me a program that would open the file, that would be great.

  4. Open the file in G-spot and see what that tells you. You may simply be missing a codec.

Ditto to that. Also try mediaplayerclassic. Works very well as long as you have the proper codec as bugster mentioned.

You might try the freeware player VLC Media Player. It doesn't usually require installation of any codecs.

But if you can open it in VirtualDub, you can usually convert it to MPEG. For a quick method, try VSO DivxToDVD. You can still DL the old freeware version if you look down the listing a little.

Thanks to all of you for the replies.

VLC Media Player opened and played the file for approximately 10 minutes then stopped.

VirtualDub attempted and failed to reconstruct the file.

GSpot indicated codec as XVCD not being installed.

I think the file is simply corrupted. I will ask my friend to send me the file again.

Are you sure that wasn't XVID? If it was then you need to install the XVID codec.
