    Hi,

I'm having odd problems with VOB files. I used MacTheRipper to get a VOB file from a DVD I have, because I wanted to convert it to PSP's .mp4 format. I usually use 0seX, but that kept crashing every time I put the disc in so I had to make do with MTR. After I ripped the file, I used VLC to view it. Now here's where the problems start, the movie plays fine, but the soundtrack is from the director's commentary, RIGHT from the beginning - obviously making it unwatchable. I opened up ffmpegX to see how that plays the same VOB file. When I preview it in ffmpegX (through mplayer?), the VOB file plays with the correct sound, no director's commentary to be heard anywhere! So, I went ahead and used ffmpegX to convert it to PSP format, and guess what? The converted .mp4 file has the director's commentary audio through the whole film...what is up with this?

Is there a way to select an audio stream when ripping a VOB file? I tried converting the same file via iPSP and still got the same problem. Also, are there any other VOB rippers anyone can recommend?

    Thanks.

EDIT: I tried using Yade X to rip the VOB file, it rips, but when it finished ripping, it shows an error message saying cannot play it back. I check my folder and the file is there, over 2GB. I opened the VOB in VLC and played it:

VLC shows that it is playing, but I just get a blank screen and the timer on the VLC menu is at 0:01, not moving. I use the track bar to move it forward and see that it shows a blank screen until 00:00:29 seconds, when the movie starts, correct sound and all. But when it starts, the counter on VLC shows up odd, the seconds change, but it takes 3 seconds for it to go from 00:00:29 to 00:00:30 and so on. The movie plays fine. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? Also, are there any VOB editors for OSX where I can get rid of the 28 seconds of useless pitch black at the beginning? Also, is there any chance I have selected something wrong in Yade X before I started the rip?

P.S. I'm trying to rip the VOB of Resident Evil Apocalypse.

  2. Possibly there is an inversion of audio track numbering. If there are two audio tracks and you're currently encoding track 0, try track 1 instead.

How do I go about doing that? I have MTR 2.6.6. I have put my DVD in, gone to the mode tab and selected Title-Chaper Extraction. I have chosen the Main Feature to extract. There is only the option of "1 Angle". The next option shows "SChtp1", if I click the drop down menu, I can choose from SChtp1-28. Then next option is EChtp1, and again, I can choose from EChtp1-28 if I hit the drop down menu. The last two options are two buttons, D and streams. I don't know what D stands for, but if I hit Streams, a tray opens up and shows the following:

Video Stream: Main feature details here (1 hour 37 mins)

    Audio Streams: EN AC3 6CH, EN AC3 2CH, ES AC3 6CH, EN AC3 2CH, EN AC3 2CH, EN AC3 2CH

(note: all of the above audio streams are selected)

Subtitles Streams: there are a whole lot available, but none of them are selected.

    I don't see options for track 0/1/etc.

BTW, in my preferences, I see the option to enable PGC Mode in Title/Chapter mode - I have it enabled - could this be a problem?

  4. D may stand for "Demux". Here you have 6 audio streams. If they're numbered from 0 to 5, then 'en ac3 6ch' will be track 0 in case of normal mapping, and track 5 in case of inverted mapping.

I tried going through this route, but it doesn't give me one VOB file when I go through this mode - I get a folder full of different files: some audio files and a video file (the video file doesn't work, BTW.

  6. The folder you have is the individual video and audio files that have been demuxed. Maybe try finding which of the audio streams is the one that you want and remux that with the video with the ffmpegX Tools.

Wait, so I can put an audio file and a video file together in ffmpegX? Can you please explain how I can go about this, thanks.

Also, are there any other VOB rippers out there for OSX apart from:

    MTR / Yade / 0seX

    Thanks
