Did a clean install of t, everything seems fine. Except the autocrop feature seems broken on large frame sources (e.g. 1080i). Sometimes crashes, sometimes gives large negative numbers. Bug?

For example, a 4x3 show over 720p should have ~160 cropped off each side, but autocrop gives 160 on the left and -400 on the right.

  2. One thing to try is to increase the start time in the filters section to a scene that is full of color all around the edges. If the screen has alot of black corners it will mess up. Try this and see what happens.

Thanks smiley, but that's not the problem.

Most of the time it just dies when I click Autocrop and I get an AppleScript Error pop-up:
    Can't get text item 3 of " ". (-1728)

    i'm always receiving this message:

Autocrop was unable to analyze this movie. Perhaps the movie is too short to be analyzed, or the 'start from' analysis point is set outside the movie.

it's a VOB-file and the start point is set to a colorfull scene!

    any hints?

    thanks,
    mic

  5. You can get cropping to work, auto or otherwise?

I'm trying to crop an EyeTV500 mpeg export* and all I get is an immediate "DING -- you are finished" and nothing has happened.

*EyeTV500 HD recording, 1920x1088, 29.97fps. Broadcast was wonky -- some sort of letterboxed SD where there are the letterbox bars on top and bottom AND pillar bars on the sides. I'm trying to crop off all the black and burn a re-writable DVD so I can watch the show in the living room. I've tried numerous ffmpegX process pre-sets trying to get the video cropped with no luck so far.

Ladd, now that you mention it, no I can't encode an HD mpeg program stream from EyeTV (500) at all. I get the immediate 'ding' as well. I hadn't actually tried because I couldn't get autocrop to work. It seems ffmpegX is not recognizing the file properly. I dont get any details in the left pane of the Summary tab, but the Info button does work properly.

I have an EyeTV 200 as well. When I get a chance I'll try a stream from it as well.

  7. Via ffmpegX, I dump EyeTV 500 HD files to DVD all the time so I can watch them on the living room TV. This is the first time I've ever wanted to use the crop function, however, and I can't seem to get it to work at all.

  8. Just finished a test using the EyeTV 500 HD recording of Prison Break; unless I'm doing something very wrong (and I wouldn't be a bit surprised), it shows that cropping doesn't work in my particular scenario.

Export EyeTV 500 HD recording as Program Stream. Open up this file in ffmpegX .09t, select preset "DVD ffmpeg", set video to DVD 16:9 and 29.97fps, leave audio settings unchanged (ac3) and click "encode". About two hours later, I get a perfectly good working VIDEO_TS folder.

To test the crop feature, I change the ffmpegX settings on the Filter tab to crop 132,145,242,244 (crop data needed for incorrectly broadcast file noted in my original message), click encode, and immediately get the "You are finished" DING and progress bar. No cropping or other encoding is performed.

I have not tested the crop feature before, so I'm unsure if it would work with my settings in any version prior to .09t. Any advice or clues from folks as to how to get the crop to work would be most appreciated.

  9. Autocrop is broken for me as well. My source is mpeg2 (produced from MPEG streamclip editing a ReplayTV source). The input video as read by ffmpegx is:

    mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480, 29.97 fps, 7413 kb/s

I hit the "autocrop" button and the analysis seems to correctly detect the black borders. When I hit "encode," however (using mencoder), ffmpeg reports an applescript error. Something like "could not convert yuv420 into type number."

If I hit "encode" with same settings but no crop, the encoding seems to work properly.

thanks in advance for any help!

  10. There's a bug here, I will release a 0.0.9t r3 ASAP. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Thanks for checking on this!

  12. Please try again with the 0.0.9t r3 version which I just uploaded at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/ffmpegX.dmg (no need to reinstall binaries, just download again the disk image and overwrite the application). Please report if it works now.

  13. No change here -- manual cropping still doesn't work for me in the situation described a few posts back (September 7, 17:39). I still get the immediate "DING - you're finished".

  14. This is not the same error reported by arfung above, possibly it is unrelated to autocrop. To understand it better, please post your process output after the "ding" (click the blue "i" icon in the progress window to obtain it).

Here's the info, and the last line of data is easy to check:

    --------------------
Encoding started on Mon Sep 12 21:33:40 EDT 2005
    Input #0, mpeg, from '/Volumes/Maxtor_200/Medium Pilot/Program Export/Medium.mpg':
    Duration: 00:43:41.6, start: 0.112000, bitrate: 13586 kb/s
    Stream #0.0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 1920x1088, 29.97 fps, 25000 kb/s
    Stream #0.1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s
Bottom crop size must be a multiple of 2
    ---------------------------

I've retested, changing the bottom crop number from 145 to 144 and the encoding progress is chugging along as expected.

    That was an easy "fix".

Ten points for having a very clear error message. Minus one point for the process immediately going to a "finished" status without any indication of an error and having said error hidden in the log acessed by the blue "i". Minus one point for manual crop entry boxes accepting odd numbers if they are illegal.

In good humor, I applaud the work you have done on this app; it's complexity far outstrips my ability to understand it. Thanks for your help.

  17. I have to improve the error handling in the Progress window, indeed. Thank you for reporting.

  18. Thanks, major. Version t3 fixed the cropping bug for me as well.
