  1. I am really trying to find out if my player will play SVCDs (a Fisher "HTD-5201", which is NOT on the list here), and I think I am burning them wrong. When I burn one (w/VCD/Easy & CDRDAO), it doesn't even play on my COMPUTER's DVD drive. So naturally it won;t play on my home DVD Player... right? Anyway, I wish there was a way I could get a sample SVCD that I KNOW was burned correctly to test it on my home player.

BTW - I emailed Fisher/Sanyo regarding SVCD compatibility and here's their response (sounds a little 'iffy'):

"The HTD-5201 will play VCD 2.0 version only. SVCD has not been approved as an international standard regarding copywrite laws.

    Thank you,

    Diane
    Sanyo Fisher Company
A Division of Sanyo North America"

Maybe they're just advising not to use them?

Thanks in advance for your help!

A svcd will not play on your pc unless you have mpeg2 decoding software installed. The easiest way to do this is to install a software dvd player and view the svcd using this.

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/svcd.htm

There are several sample svcd images posted on this site for you to use. Whatever results you get please post them in the dvd player section so others will know as well.

If the manufacturer tells you that svcds aren't supported than you should probably believe them. But Svcds have undergone IEC standardization, though I think its still a work in progress. As far as I know SVCDS are definitely considered an international standard so their reasons for not supporting the format are basically bull.

  3. I have tried those sample files and the resilting SVCD disc will not play on my Computer's DVD player (with Power DVD installed). That leads me to beleive I'm not burning it correctly. It's either that or the Computer's DVD Software will not play SVCDs? But it does play VCDs, as does my home player.

As for my Home DVD Player, I was hoping that the manufacturer's response above was just intended to deter me from using SVCDs because of copyright politics...

I need a fool-proof SVCD to test with...

Humbucked, he already said he tried those samples.

blarb, I don't use PowerDVD so I may not be correct about this but I belive that it doesnt support svcds. This means that it wont play in disk mode, you will need to open the mpg file in file mode. You should try downloading a trial version of a software dvd player that supports svcds such as varoDVD or WinDvd. These would be much better for testing purposes. Those samples should be about as foolproof as you can get since they are disk images but if you want you can order pressed SVCD samples from philip's homepage.

  6. blarb, if i understand correctly, previous PowerDVD will not play burnt SVCD disc(unsupport format or something), unless you use file mode and go into disc directory and play them there. But with PowerDVD xp 4.0, this will play both VCD and SVCD in disc mode. And if you wanna make sure that your burn svcd correctly, use svcd sample (from this site) and burn with VCDImager + CDRwin. If your player still cannot play it, I believe your player's not support SVCD format.
