Highest AutoGK settings (when filesize is no object)

What is the highest quality I can get from AutoGK?

These are my 3 options as I see them:

Predefined size>Maximum Quality
Custom size (MB)>10,000
Target quality (in percentage)>100

Also, I am working from DVD-rip so should I assume that a resolution setting higher than 720px wide is not helpful?

Finally, how about Xvid or Divx 5?

Not sure about AutoGK, but XviD set to a low quant, single pass with a high quality quant matrix will give you the best quality.

Encode at the original DVD res and set XviD's PAR accordingly so that it resizes correctly on playback.

Maximum Quality is 1-pass Quant 2 with no B-Frames. 100% Quality is 1-pass Quant 2 with B-Frames enabled. Any huge MB size is 2-pass. You may as well use one of the 1-pass Modes.

For even better quality, as celtic_druid mentioned, run a 1-pass with a high bitrate matrix. Do it directly in VDubMod, bypassing AutoGK. Be warned, though, depending on the movie, it's possible to approach or even surpass the size of the original DVD.

I don't see settings for "quant" or B-frames in AutoGK.

For certain reasons, I only want to use AuoGK. If someone (someone who actually knows the answer of course) could just tell me which of the three options I posted:

1) Predefined size>Maximum Quality
2) Custom size (MB)>10,000
3) Target quality (in percentage)>100

...will give me he best quality output. I am trying to make this a simple question and it seems to be getting complicated for some reason.

That's because they aren't there for you to choose. It's all done automatically. You want the best quality, final size no consideration? Then choose:

Was that so hard? I never asked for all that extra information, so don't jump all over me when I remind you that I didn't.

If you find it too difficult to answer people's questions when they are carefully laid out for even the biggest moron to understand, move on! This forum would likely be half the size it is if people would just answer what is asked, and not feel the need to show off their personal video knowledge and opinions with diarrhea of he mouth.

It's not always black and white. Sometimes answers have to be qualified. What's best for one situation or person may not be best for a different situation or person. Frankly, I find your ignorance of such a noob-friendly program as AutoGK astonishing. Since I wrote about 95% of the tutorial included with it, and since I spent many hours writing, revising, and updating it, and since I wrote it specifically to answer questions such as yours, and since had you read it you wouldn't have asked those questions in the first place, then I feel more than justified in coming down hard on you. Perhaps you've heard the acronym, "RTFM" before?

This is exactly why the Doom9 site has a rule stating, "Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!" Rule 1 might also apply.

I didn't ask "what's best?", I asked, what gives the highest quality output? The reason Doom9 suggests not to ask "what's best?" is because it gives people like you an open invitation to spew forh more information than is likely desired by the original poster.

My thread could have been so simple, two posts would have closed it. My question, and your 2nd reply, without the attitude. I worded a question so simply because I wanted a simple answer, and you obviously knew the short, *solicited* answer to my question because you yourself gave me that answer at the end of your "coming down hard on me" post.

I have been a member here for a long time, and I used to give daily advice to members on conversion and DVD authoring, but had to leave due to the sheer quantity of blowhard know-it-alls. I pop back in from time to time for a quick question and am reminded every time why I don't frequent vcdhelp anymore.

A great about AutoGK is that you can set it a certain way and it can fix the file size if it’s over kill.

I set the file size to 3825, and the video size to auto. I use the 5.1 Dolby Digital and only use the forced subs. (I use Xvid codecs and I seem to get better quality.)

With this setting, AutoGK will run a two pass. When it gets to the 2nd pass and the file size is overkill it will warn me that the file will be undersized. If AutoGK needs all of the file size it will use it. You should note that an AVI file can only be 3.9 gigs.
The end quality with this method is always great IMHO.

Last AutoGK project, I backed-up Alien 3 and 4 of the quadriology edition. I ripped the longer director’s cut and used the 5.1 dolby soundtrack. Each file was 2.2 to 2.3 gigs and burned to a DVD-ROM UDF. Plays great on my PC and should be great on a STB DVD/DivX player when I decided on one.

One thing to note, I’m still using 1.91. I upgraded to the version 2.X and the under sizing for over kill seemed to be removed. It might be back in the newer versions of 2.x
