  1. Why? All the windows hosts file needs in it is 1 line.

    127.0.0.1 localhost

Why are these oversize files better?

    Thanks

    Nice One ! Thanks.

    TBoneit - from the site:

"You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the Server that supplies these little gems. Example - the following entry 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net blocks all files supplied by that DoubleClick Server to the web page you are viewing. This also prevents the server from tracking your movements. Why? ... because in most cases "Ad Servers" like Doubleclick will open a separate connection on the webpage you are viewing."

    Thanks Soopafresh
I could not have explained it any better. You are welcome.
I must just add: the system takes probably a fraction of a second to process those Hosts files.

  5. Got it, I guess I like a clean hosts file since it seems to slow things down with a large one. At least here at work with a 2Ghz P4.

I never worried about the hosts getting hijacked since I run NAV internet security as well as Spysweeper and Teatimer from Spybot and Spyware Guard. Maybe I'm paranoid but I spend a lot of time cleaning out spyware on customers computers. Note: I run the same stuff at home. Knock wood! So far so good.

    Cheers

Edit: I hadn't thought about using Hosts to block Adverts, Good Idea.

Here is a great website that explains about the host file:

    http://accs-net.com/hosts/

I have been using the hosts file to "stealth" myself from ads for over 5 years and it is one of the best kept secrets of the Internet.

I wouldn't connect to the Internet without it.

  8. It may be that adverts do not bother me or maybeI just don't see them as a pest or it may be that I just tune them out without them impinging on my conciousness, not real sure.

It also could be that the web surfing I do isn't at sites rampant with adverts.

I go to manufacturers sites for work, I go to a few video and dbs sites and not much else.

  9. I just use Firefox with Adblock installed and the new autoupdater for FiltersetG. I haven't seen ads in quite some time. It's an option to consider if messing with host files are too annoying for you.
