  1. During a lightning storm, the power went out, shutting down my pc. After restarting my computer, I was no longer able to connect to my DSL. My network connection now says "network cable unplugged". I know that the DSL connection itself is fine because when I connect the cable to my laptop, I can access the internet fine (LEDs lighting up on both the cable modem and the laptop's NIC).

    Help please!

    - I have 3 network cards (1 on board and 2 PCIs), and they all say the same thing no matter which one I use.
the Link/Activity LEDs do not light up. the ethernet indicator in the cable modem does not light up.
    - I have tried removing and reinstalling the NICs.
    - I've tried installing only one of the NICs.
    - In device manager, none of the NICs show an exclamation point.
    - all device drivers are updated
    - I even reinstalled XP from scratch using another hard disk, and I get the same problem.
    - I've tried the "netsh int ip reset" command to reset TCP/IP
    - my PC is clean, no dust
    - all NICs are firmly in their slots, no bent pins.
    - the cable itself is fine (it works with my laptop). but i also tried another cable just to be sure. still no go.

so... what do you think is wrong? I'm guessing the mobo? How can I be sure? I dont want to buy a new mobo and still get the same problem.

Do you have both DSL and Cable internet?

A cable modem is not a DSL Modem.

I've tried the "netsh int ip reset" command to reset TCP/IP
Why would you do that? All you have to do is ipconfig /release and ipconfig/renew from a command prompt.

  3. DSL. DSL modem i should have said.

i tried "netsh int ip reset" because ive tried everything.
ipconfig /release and ipconfig/renew doesnt do anything. ("media disconnected")
