The "Sony" is a LiteOn drive, last I checked.

Try a Ritek DVD+R, use DVDShrink (re-author "movie only" with at least the 85% "quality" setting, even if you have to limit the length of the movie to make it fit). Save to a VIDEO_TS folder and burn at no more than half the maximum speed using CopyToDVD. Make sure CopyToDVD is configured to "UDF" and uncheck all other file systems.

If the resulting disc does not play in your set top box, you have a truly pooched system. I'd suspect your OS installation rather than the Sony burner. Wipe your HD and reinstall XP up to and including SP1. There are some screwy parts of SP2 that might make ripping/burning goofy so, if you can, leave out the SP2 (unless you are using Outlook for eMail; in that case, DO install SP2 and all security updates as you don't want to be a spam-bot, right?).

Good luck. Please advise your progress.

Now that we know DVDShrink & CopyToDVD work properly, I would point to either (or both) CloneDVD or Nero. I've had problems with various versions of Nero (when it comes to burning DVDs). I've never used CloneDVD so can't comment on that app.

I would advise that you stick with DVDShrink and CopyToDVD. Now is the time for the next "test". Do a "movie only" rip using DVDShrink and let the program use automatic compression. Uncheck any audio tracks and subtitle tracks you don't need (to mnimize the compression), then proceed. Again, use CopyToDVD (video, only UDF). Some players don't like to see the "extra" filesystems, only UDF.

If this resolves your problem, stay with it. These are both excellent applications. While there are slightly better rip/compression apps out there, they come with their own set of problems.

    Please post results. Thanks.

  6. My experience:
I like the flexibility offered by DVDShrink.
Elby/Slysoft's "CloneDVD2" has a bit less flexibility, but it does a good job of transcoding and runs much faster than DVDShrink. However, I don't trust it to burn because I had problems with it on my system.
Roxio's EMC7 is also capable of transcoding, but I've never used it. EMC7 has been excellent for actually burning to media on my system and is my first choice.

    well
    worked so fine
and gave me more than 90% quality, almost perfect, but i had to remove everything and kept only 5.1 audio.

also i tried to make video files with nero record then burn them with
copytoDVD and that also worked and gave me excellent result

Roxio's encoding products for OSX (Popcorn and Toast 7 which incorporates the Popcorn "engine) have only "fair" encoding capabilities when compared to, let's say, DVDShrink on the PC. (I use both Mac & PC.)

In any case, you've got a good baseline of "what works" so you can dabble a bit with other tools yet have a decent set of software to which you may return if necessary.

    Ciao!
