  1. Has anyone had any experience with renting DVDs with these yellow/gold copy protection strips? They look like thin, 2" long strips of tape, about the width of a strand of pasta. A piece of regular clear tape covers these yellow strips.

I tried backing up this DVD but MacTheRipper would not let me do it. One odd observation is that the DVD appears as "UNTITLED" on my hard drive. However, the actual name of the DVD, "THE_ALAMO," appears in the MacTheRipper menu. I click the "rip" button on MacTheRipper but the program does not permit me to complete the rip process. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks.

  4. I don't think they are copy protection strips anyway. Video Rental stores and libraries use them to trigger their security scanners, so you can't walk out the door with their cds and DVDs.

They are purely anti-theft measure. For security scanners. Libraries for example have those too (in Finland, at least). Based on eddy-currents (high school physics)

Obviously, we can't help anyone for stealing or copying something he/she doesn't own. Of course, it's not theft, if you own it. But then question has to be reformulated.

They are definitely security strips for preventing theft. Most dvd stores use them.

You shouldn't be copying dvds that you do not own. That is considered as warez and not permitted on this forum.

  7. To me it wouldn't matter what they were I'd just be worried they would come of in my changer and damage it as well as void any warranty. My changer is a sony, the disks load standing on edge and I believe they play that way too. Whether or not that would make these strips more prone to coming off I do not know. But I do know that the manual even states no labels on disks, Music, VCD or DVD. SO I've always used a sharpie and now lats week or so a R200 since Costco had that great sale on printable DVDs.

    Cheers

As an edit anything tat goes close to the edge could be a problem as the disks stand up in a slot in the turntable.

These strips are not on the dvds itself, but the dvd cover.

Actually alot of rental stores around here have the thin strip of metal the OP was describing mounted right to the dvd disc itself with a heavy piece of clear plastic tape like cover, on game disc's also... i hate them because i figure they could easily throw the balance off.
But one local place does not use them anymore, their cases on the shelf have the bigger ones in them that are like in store bought cases and have a special hub lock on them so you cant open the case and steal the dvd.

  10. No warez. Copying rental DVDs is illegal.
