You should probably be able to find a lens-cleaner disc in a local store. Most of them are generally the same - one or two small, thin brushes attached to the non-label side of a CD/DVD disc. I believe Memorex and Recoton offer some, not sure about other manufacturers.

At worst, you might have to remove the top cover from the 642 and manually clean the lens (using a lint-free soft swab, and I don't remember offhand what cleaning fluid (type of alcohol) is recommended for the process.) If it doesn't work after that, the laser may have failed.

npnha: This really doesn't relate to the topic. You probably should have started a new post.

That said, stand-alone DVD players, including the 642, can be much more picky about AVI files than a computer. In this case, the AVI files have to be DivX/XVid encoded, generally with MP3 audio, and be under 720x*** in resolution. No GMC or QPEL. Packed bitstream and/or VBR audio may cause problems (or not).

To be sure, run at least one of the AVI files from the disc through a utility like GSpot and post the screenshot here, so we can see what might be causing the problem. (Blank out the file and path/directory names if you prefer.)

Thank you for answer! On that disk I have divx files with all that requirements you asked me to check. I put one of that files on CD-R and it works fine, but doesn't work on dvd disk.

How are you burning your DVD data disc (in which format, ISO, or UDF+ISO)? I create data DVD discs for watching on my 642, and haven't had any problems with regular discs or rewritable DVDs.

Sorry, I'm not good on all this. I have Windows Vista Basic and from "my documents" I just highlight files and click "burn" button. I have DVD-R disk. After that I left room and when com back dvd tray was open and disk ready.

I'm not sure what data disc format Vista uses... but I believe that behind the scenes, it's using Roxio components, so it might not always create discs everything else likes.

You might try Imgburn in Build mode (with Output > Device set). Plus, it might also be worth it to use DVD-RWs until you're sure you're burning everything the way the 642 wants it (and you can always erase it and create another AVI DVD. )

Im trying to make my DVP642 mulit region. I entered some recommended settings after the ol 5, 6, 9, ok menu and now the screen just scrolls down and down. of course i was given the wrong settings but the question is.....how do i get it back to the way it was. I can even see the screen properly to make more adjustments. I have tried some firmware updates hoping this would reset it but nope. Any suggestions?

You forgot a step. Turn on monitor. Turn on DVD player. Press open button for tray. Enter 7,8,9. enter ok on remote. enter numeral "0". "0" should appear in lower left hand side of monitor screen. You are now set for all regions.
