  1. It seems to be that DVDDectryptor rips DVDs with protection, puts it ino Video_TS dirs (or an ISO) on a harddrive.
Dvd Shrink seems to be able to rip protected CDs, put it into Video_TS dirs or an ISO on a harddrive, but it also does transcoding, to fit bigger stuff on smaller discs.

I might have missed something, but what is the strong points of DVD Dectryptor, if DVD shrink does the same things?

They do the ripping part somewhat differently, that's all. Some discs that DVDShrink can't rip, DVDDecrypter will, and some that DVDDecrypter can't rip, DVDFab Decrypter will.

  3. I like Decrypter better for ripping; it just seems simpler and doesn't spit up errors like shrink seems to (probably because it's been awhile since shrink was updated). I only use shrink to compress, I use Decrypter, then PGCEdit for a quick clean-up, shrink to compress/make ISO and Decrypter to burn.

DVD Shrink hasn't been updated for ages (since the author went to work for Ahead doing Nero Recode) so it cant handle the latest copy protections like Sony's ArccOSS, which DVD Decrypter can.

Other than that, I cant think of anything else.

  5. What's different? Well, DVDDecrypter has a hell of a lot more settings (and possibilities) than DVDShrink, whose ripping functionality is quite basic. And Decrypter can import protected sectors lists to deal with ARccOS discs. Or create one yourself. So DVDDecrypter should be good for a long time yet. The main thing it can't do that Shrink can is transcode.

  6. DVD Decrypter can write an ISO.

DVD Shrink cannot burn to a DVD on it's own. It must have either DVD Decrypter, Nero or CopytoDVD installed to burn. DVD Decrypter has a very good burning engine, albiet it must be fed ISO files.

IMHO, DVDDecryter does a great job of ripping and burning ISO files. Shrink does a great job of "Shrinking" duh, a video file once it is on your hard drive. If you want to rip whatever, however, get AnyDVD running in the background and then use whatever software you want that does what you want the best....I haven't had to use DVDFab...yet.
