I downloaded the whole season 4 episodes of American Idol just recently. In some of the videos there are slight pixelation problems. It isn't very noticable but it is kind of annoying. Is there any way of repairing the pixelation? Thanks in advance.

Well, that's what happens when one downloads something like this. Usually it is low bitrate so the file won't be so large. Result is Macro Blocking NOT Pixelation.

As to what can be done to repair it? Not much! I think someone else may have some insight on what to do but in reality is garbage in garbage out though some filtration during reconvertion may reduce the problem but not eliminate it.

How would I do filtration during reconvertion? I would like to try it and see if it helps. Thanks in advance.

I'm not expert on that subject as I avoid these tipes of files. I work straight from original DVDs. Virtual DUB can take an AVI Divx and re convert back again to AVI but will some filtration applied to reduce visual problems like noise and such. I'm afraid I'll have to reffer this one to the more wiser members.

Ok, thanks, jtoolman. I am just glad there may be a way to kind of fix the problem I am having. I have never worked with Virtual DUB but I am willing to try it. Is it difficult to apply filtration?

Try enabling post processing in your player/decoder.

Well I don't know either since I don't know what player or decoder you are using.

For dshow players it would be the decoder. In the player select the decoder, go into the options and enable post processing, especially deblocking options.

The file is probably encoded with XviD, so for XviD you would enable Deblocking (Y) and (UV). You could also enable derining.

On the other hand you could be using DivX, ffdshow, 3ivX, Nero, etc. for decoding or not using a dshow player at all.

The videos are Xvid. How do I get the dshow player? I don't exactly know what you mean by "player" but if it means Windows Media Player, that is what I use. I will try the dshow player though if you can tell me where to get it please.

You might try the Virtualdub Deblocking filter from MSU. It can sometimes produce pretty good results (it's pretty good for VCD sourced material), but it is slowish

Windows Media Player is a dshow (direct show) based player. Unfortunatly if you are using a version newer than 6.4, it doesn't give you access to filter properties. You can however configure XviD via the start up menu or rundll32.exe xvid.ax,Configure. That is if XviD is being used to decode.

This is just for watching though. If you are actually planing on converting then as said there are many filters.

They are already AVI files. I wasn't planning on converting them but if it is possible to convert them from AVI to AVI, I will try it so I can do the filters just to see if it will work on the pixelation or whatever it is called.

"Convert" implies changing the video from one type to another, say xvid to divx or mpeg. Perhaps a better term might be "re-encode" and yes you can do that and still use the same avi compression type. Virtualdub can do that and it has many filters available that you can plug in.

Please advise me on which filters I need to use. I am completely unfamiliar with Virtualdub. Thanks in advance.
