I am currently trying to burn LOTR: Return of the King with a new Sony DW-Q28A drive and keep getting an error message with DVDShrink saying that the disk is copy protected and can not continue. This message comes up while burning the disk, after encoding, so I have wasted a few disks on this. I never had this problem with my old Generic DVD-RW drive. I was wondering if I need to update the firmware for the Sony DW-Q28A. Maybe the disk is protected and I need DVD43. Any help on this would be great.
Also this is kinda stupid but I can encode the disk with my old drive but when I go to burn, DVDShrink will only burn when I put blank media into my new drive. Is there a way to tell DVDShrink to burn with the old drive, or can someone tell me how to burn the files that DVDShrink creates using NERO. Sorry thats so basic, but I only learned how to burn using DVDShrink and it does all the burning for you. THANKS in advance to anyone who spends their time on this issue of mine. THANKS

That's funny cause I've backed up all three movies without a hitch. When are you getting this warning about copy protection? Does Shrink let you analyze and trancode? Is the error only when you are burning?
You say you've wasted several discs so I assume you have reached the burning stage. Sometimes backing up from a backup or a download will give you that error when burning. Nver from a purchased original disc. I would ignore it.
You can chose ANY drive to burn when you press backup.
You could simply the whole process since you have two drives. Put the original ini the older drive, and burn to the new one. Set Shrink to create and ISO and Burn the ISO with DVD Decrypter. Virtually painless. I wonder why everyone would not do it this way. I literally walk away and in less than 45 min it's done.No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Unless you are using DVDDecrypter to burn you are using Nero to burn as Shrink doesn't have it's own burning engine.
You may need Decrypter or DVDFab to rip the DVD to your hard drive before Shrinking, depending on how it's encrypted.
Not sure about the second question. You choose where the Shrink files go when Shrink finishes transcoding. Since you are using Nero, change the drive to the one you want to burn to in Nero. -
UPDATE: I unhooked the SONY DW-Q28A and only ran my old drive and everything worked just fine. So there has to be something wierd with the Sony Drive. Does anyone know what would cause or solve this problem????? I would like to just use DVDShrink by itself and the new SOny drive.

What do you have the drives jumpers set to? On each channel there should be one master and one slave drive.
I just got that drive myself and it works fine for me. I set it as master and my DVD ROM as slave on the same channel. -
It is Master to a second Hard Drive I have on IDE Cable 2. My other DVDRW which is working fine is on a Raid Controller Card. I dont think that is the problem. I am trying to create an Iso file and burn with DVD Decrypter (all through DVDShrink). I hope this solves the problem.
REDWUDZ: have you tried using DVDShrink burn with NERO? If you havent I wonder if that is what the issue is. Well I've got 40 minutes left encoding, will let you know how this works!
THANKS AGAIN for all the help -
Tried Using DVDShrink ---> DVD Decrypter Burn and got this error while burning.....ANY HELP????????????

I'm not sure about that error. It sounds like it's saying it's the wrong media.
Someone here may be more familiar with it.
I normally use Nero to burn from Shrink, mainly because I have had no problems (So far) burning with Nero.
Can you trade the position of the two drives? Maybe it is a bad drive? -
I have found that the Sony DW-Q28A is also the same drive as the Sony DRU-800A which has firmware updates. Do you think updating the firmware will help this problem?

First, and foremost, what kind of blank media are you using? It may be that the media worked well with the older drive, but the new drive does not "like" the same media. This happens. Just as certain burners "like" DVD+R discs much more than DVD-R discs (Lite-On is a well-known exmaple of this), there are certain burners that choke on some of the mediocre media, even though a competing burner handles that same brand of media or that same manufacturered media with no problems at all. My Pionner chokes on Imation (usually these are crap) discs on every every burn, but I can take this same "garbage" stuff to work and it will burn on my NEC burner, everytime. The best quality media is often "the best" because it is manufactured to careful standards, uses excellent dye, and because it has a very popular "write scheme" which is almost universally recognized by the burners, already.
To repeat some important information mentioned above...
Your errors are NOT coming from DVDShrink. DVD Shrink cannot burn. Your errors are coming from a burning software program, which DVDShrink has started up automatically in the background after it has completed its thing. There are only two programs that DVDShrink can use in this way -- Nero Burning Rom, and DVDDecrypter.
The "check condition" and "incompatible media" errors you are seeing while burning are both common error messages in burning programs. They are similar to the popular "CRC -- Cyclic Redundancy Check" error mesages one often sees when ripping a disc. They are even more similar to the "illegal disc" error that people sometimes see when burning. It basically is the drive saying "I had a problem with this dic, for some reason." It is actually a rather generic message, unfortunately. It could be because the media is bad, or because the media is not supported by that DVD burner, or because the media is a truly incompatble format, or because the media has a "write protection scheme" that the DVD burner is not yet programmed to write to. (Sometimes, an updated firmware will actually solve this particular type of error, by the way). But, it could also be due to a hardware error, where the burner experiences time-outs... and yes, that can even happen because of a problem with the "master-slave" issue, as was discussed up above, or it can happen because of a bad IEEE cable (not likely, but it has happened), or a bad burner (even less likely, but again it has certainly happened.) I have seen seen this same error pop up with a bad ASPI layer, and also with a software driver conflict (the case I recall was one where the person had both Nero and Roxio software, and those drivers can interfere with one another if you happen to have the wrong version and if you happen to be running certain incantations of Windows.) The error messages that the Nero / Roxio conflict produces are either the "incompatible media" message, or else the "illegal disc" error message.
The odds would indicate that you should begin with the media as a possible source (remembering that this same media might work fine in your other burner, or in my burner, but not the burner I have at work). Then, you should also check to see if you have the latest, greatest legitimate firmware. Keep in mind that the number one reason that manufacturers release new firmware is to add new "write schemes" to try to deal with some of the newer discs released in the market, and also to deal with some of the "lousier" media that is out there. They add these schemes in response to complaints from customers, such as "my burner can't write to brand XX discs," or "I just bought some 8X discs, and they do not work at 8X, but I can write to them at 4X."
Hope something here helps...
I can assure you that the problem is not with the source disc (unless you are getting errors you have not mentioned during the first part of the process, while the disc is being ripped). Many, many people had no problems with the Lord of the Rings discs, in every edition and every release, and every region, using all of the more popular ripping programs out there.
I can also assure you that the problem is not with the DVD Shrink (unless you are getting errors you have not mentioned during the first part of the process, while the disc is being ripped). I know for a fact that it can easily be used to rip and compress the LOTR discs, as do many others here.
So, we need to examine the burning part of the process, and it is always best to start with the problems that occur with the most frequency.

BSpielbauer, first off let me thank you for you well explained information. People like you are what helps forums like this thrive.
On the burning issue. It turns out that the SONY DW-Q28A is a fairly new drive that does not have any official firmware updates through SONY. I found that this drive is also the same as the SONY DRU-800A and the Lite-On SOHW-1693S, which have firmware updates. I changed my SONY KYS1 firmware (for the DW-Q28A) to SONY KY04 firmware (for the DRU-800A) and everything works fine.
I was using Memorex 8x DVD-R so I wasnt sold on the idea that the media was bad, just the firmware my drive comes with did not like them.
THANKS again to all who helped out here, only wasted 7 DVD's messing with this. NOT all that bad. -
I am about to buy this drive as well. Are you sure that the Sony DWQ28A drive is the same as the DRU800 drive?
Also can you please help me out how I can flash the firmware on it to the firmware of the DRU800 drive? Thanks guys. -
I've used a Sony DWQ28A for a couple of months now with no problems, no coasters and about 50 burns. No firmware upgrades, either. Using Prodisc S03 and Prodisc F01. 4X, 8X, -R. I would try different media before you try to change the firmware.

Even if if you are now managing to get it to burn with the new firmware, keep in mind that this could come back to haunt you at a later date, perhaps eight months from now, when you find that that brand new DVD player you just bought chokes on all of your backups.

Maybe its Nero? Im no genious or anything but maybe you could try another burning app. I know you wont be able to use it with dvdshrink but theres always Record Now. I once had a problem with nero but I did something or another it worked fine but never had a problem with record now. It can never hurt to try right.

If you haven't already, check this out:

You can use this program to hack your firmware. I have the 1693 and usedd it to increase my read speed and it works great. There is alot of other things you can do as well.
