  2. ok well ATI MMC pissed me off enough with just trying to get the record button working, I was able to record successful a commerical wrestling tape without any signs of MV in it, so no dark and light and all those stuff.

Hi8/VHS to DVD: which bitrate do you recommend?

Half D1 (352x576 PAL or 352x480 NTSC) with 2-pass vbr and an average bitrate around 3000 kbit/s seems OK for VHS source.

This is the root of the problem. Digitizing an analog signal can never give you an exact representation of the original. The real question is: what is close enough? That is subject to the hardware and software used, and in the end, in the eye of the beholder.

If you can't run ATI's software, then your problems are more than their software. Try building a decent machine and it will be bullet-proof. I hear this complaint all the time about ATI's MMC and either I must live on a different planet or I am doing something different.

SP2 has a huge bug list. Installing it on an "unclean" system is a disaster waiting to happen too. Not like installing OS, then SP1, then SP2.

It sounds like you had a newer version of MMC on your computer. Are you sure you completely removed it before trying to go to the earlier version? ATI software and drviers are also notorious for not installing right unless you make sure you got rid of ALL of the previous install before performing the new install.
