Been trying to track down this problem i have been having. Seems that my DVD back ups using Shrink/Nero are having glitching-skipping-down right not playing problem.
At first i thought it was the media so i switched from some Sony +R 8's to some internet bought Ridata +R 8's and i continue to have the problem.
I bought a laser cleaner and it seemed to clear up the problem...or so i thought but i was fooled. My Panasonic DVD player does well with the dvds but when i play them on other models i get the issue.
NOW..on to the question. Can buring at the maximum speed cause the problems? Should i lower the burning speed even though the Purchased DVD's state speed 8?
Ive defragged and cleaned out my system but i keep making defective backups.
Ive never had this problem before. It seems to have just cropped up recently. Ive had a bad set of disks before and all i had to do was change disks and problem was solved.
This is frustrating. Anyone have any answers to this possible common problem?![]()

If your media is rated 8x,I would recommend burning at 4x .You could also use DVDDecrypter to burn as it is a very stable burning tool.

I doubt the speed you burn would have much effect on the quality. After all, if the discs are made for, say, 8X and the burner for the same speed, there is no reason to lower the speed.
The two most common causes for your type of problem are media and dirty laser lens/ worn out writer. If the skipping occurs to the end of the DVD, then that's usually media. Burn smaller files in that case. Defragging and cleaning up your system has little to do with burning problems.
Just my opinion, but unless you are always shuffling a large amount of files around on a regular basis, frequent defragging is probably just prematurely wearing out your drive. XP doesn't generally need constant defragging.
When you say the DVD plays fine on one player, but not others, that goes back to media. You need to try some other brands. Look to the left under burners and see what people that have your burner use. Having the best quality media is no help if it not compatible with your burner and your players.
Cleaning discs may or may not help clean a laser lens. If you have a environment with a lot of grease in the air and dust, or you are a heavy smoker, they may not be up to the challenge. Still, if it reads properly and some players play it's discs properly, it may not need cleaning[/u] -
Another question if i may ask....
I have an OEM version of NERO express. Do you think a Burner program could effect the process and cause problems?
The only burner programs i have used is Drag to DVD and Nero. Has anyone had any problems with Burning software? -
OEM versions can be a crippled version, but with Nero, normally it's just one for a specific burner and can't be used on another. It also may have only Express and not Nero Burning ROM. .
If you think the burning software is a problem, use DVD Decrypter to burn. DVD Decrypter is freeware.
Just uncheck 'Enable burning with Nero' in Shrink. When it gets done 'shrinking' and encoding, you will have a requester that says 'Select backup target'.
Select 'ISO image file and burn with DVD Decrypter'. This will stop Nero wanting to modify your files, if that is the problem. It's really very easy this way. -
As suggested .... burn an ISO image with DVD Shrink, then with DVD Decrypter.
Regardless of the speed of the media I have, I burn at x4 and do not have any problems. The burning process at x4 is less than 15 minutes.
