  1. Hi,

I am running Windows XP SP1, 2.6 Ghz, 1 GB RAM. Essentially I am trying to convert an AVI files to DVD files to watch on my standalone DVD player. I am using WinAVI converter 6.3 for this conversion process.

I have an AVI that cannot be played in Windows Media Player. It can be played in Windows Media Player Classic v6.4.8.4 but only the first 2 mins and 55 seconds of an otherwise 43 minute episode will play.

I opened this up in VirtualDubMod, and an AVI Import Filter dialog box tells me that it is "Reconstructing missing index block (aggressive mode)".

And when I used DivFix, the AVI created by it is playable in Windows Media Player, but even though the file was 350 MB, I can only see the first 2 mins and 55 seconds.

Is there anything I can do to this "broken" AVI so that I can view the whole 43 minutes?

    Thanks in advance,

Past experience says the file is corrupted, and can't be salvaged. You may have to find a different version of the file.

Try Opening it with virtualdub / virtualdubmod,
wait for the reconstruction to finish and then create a new AVI file, using Direct Stream Copy for both the video and audio streams.

The new file AVI file should (read might) work fine.

If that doesn't work, try using the mark-in and mark-out options to cut out the problematic area(s). Use shift+right and shift-left (or hold down the shift key while using the slider) to step from keyframe to keyframe. Go to the last keyframe before the bad section, press mark-in. Then find the first keyframe after the bad section and mark-out. Press Delete (or Edit->Cut, or CTRL+X) to cut out the marked off section. Repeat for any other bad sections. Finally save in Direct Stream Copy mode.

  6. I opened the file in VirtualDubMod and after the AVI Import Filter dialog box, it asked me if I wanted to rewrite the header. I click Yes, and when the AVI displayed, I could only seek to 2 mins and 55 seconds. That was the end of video

I will get the file again. Thanks for your help though peeps.
