My computer isn't strong enough to play DivX. I'm going to upgrade it when I get the time and money (which involves shipping it to Daystar for a G4 upgrade). Until then, I want to transcode DivX AVI's into MPEG-2 files.

I did so with the ffmpeg encoder. However, I'm not sure the file encoded properly:

In QuickTime Player (version 7), the DivX file played back, but stuttered uncontrollably (a known DivX bug, they're working on a fix). The MPEG played back without video.

In VLC, the DivX looked more like a PowerPoint presentation than a movie. The MPEG played without sound. Each elementary stream played back just fine, though.

I gave mplayer a shot, but got the stuttering playback (just like I did with the DivX in QuickTime).

DivX file: 640x480 video, 16-bit 48KHz stereo MP3 sound
Output: Same size video, 16-bit 48KHz stereo MP2 sound

I deleted all the files and am going to re-encode. Maybe I just forgot to check an option? Someone enlighten me.
