I was wondering if anyone happens to have a hack for the Sony DVP-NC80V/B. I just bought it the other day and I have a ton of region 2 DVDs that it cannot read due to the area rescrictions.
Any help here would be great!
Thanks alot in advance!

Sony makes it nearly impossible to change region settings on their DVD players. I'd take it back and get something more compatible to your needs, especially since you have all your region 2 DVD's.

Well, it's the only DVD player any of my local retailers carried that supported the type of sound system hook ups I needed. So I guess this means im stuck with 30+ useless region 2..

I am in a similar situation. I own its immediate predecessor, the DVP-NC875V/B. I made an unsuccessful attempt hacking it via a One for All remote that dates back to Dec. 2001. I plan on purchasing a One for All model URC10825 (Feb. 2005) and applying the same hack, but with the newer Sony DVD player codes. Here's the procedure. (1) Select DVD as your device. (2) Hold SET until the LED blinks twice. (3) Enter one of these device codes (0533, 1533, 0864, 1903, 1981, 1069, 1934, 1033, 1095, 1904, 2020, 1070,or 1633). (4) Hold SET until the LED blinks twice. (5) Enter 994. (6) Press SET. (7) Enter 1891. (8) Repeat steps 4 through 6 and enter 2552. (9) Repeat steps 4-6 and enter 0953. (10) Repeat steps 4 through 6 and enter 2214. (11) Repeat steps 4 through 6 and enter 0795. (12) Make sure the SONY is in STANDBY or simply plugged in and turned off. (13) Enter 12345. The DVD player should turn on. Wait for INSERT DISK, NO DISK, Etc. (14) Repeat step 13. (15) Power up the DVD player and try a foreign DVD. If it plays, then reset your remote to factory defaults by holding SET until the LED blinks and then enter 981. The LED will blink four times. congradulations! Read no further. If it does not play, then repeat steps 1 through 15 selecting another four digit device code as listed in step 3. Again, I do not yet own a Feb. 2005 One for All URC10820. The only way I got all the four digit device codes was downloading its manual for free off of some online reseller. If anyone has good luck with one of the more modern one for all remotes, please let us know.

Bad news. I just got the One for All URC10820 in the mail yesterday. I tried the above procedure using all the device codes in step 3 and mine still isn't multi-region compatible. What I don't understand is why people were successful applying the above procedure on the DVP-NS575, DVP-NC675, DVP-NS775, DVP-NS975, and DVP-NS50. If you want the combination of a 5-disk changer, SACD compatibility, and multi-region compatibility, I have heard great reviews of and success stories with the Yamaha DV-C6760. For $100 more, the DV-C6770 can play DVD-AUDIO and output PAL and NTSC via the Progressive output.

Bad news (at least for its predecessor). I burned both the NTSC and PAL test disks with the ISO files found at http://xvi.rpc1.org/regiondisplay.html . The NTSC disk played, but the player refused the PAL one as though the region was incorrect. So even if you have succeeded in making it multi-region compatible, unless you purchase DVDs from Japan which are Region 2 but NTSC, chances are you might have wasted a lot of money and time buying and programming remotes. If you want a good multi-region, multi-audio/video-format, multi-disk DVD changer, check out the Yamaha DV C6660, DV C6760, and/or the DV C6770. Based on the popularity of the Philips DVP-642, you might be pleased to know that according to some DVD benchmark page (I don't have a URL), it uses Philips video decoding circuitry.

P.S. According to that benchmark page, the Pioneer DV-285/588 single-disk, multi-format players were praised for their high-quality PAL-to-NTSC conversion. They claimed they couldn't be made multi-region compatible. However, I don't know if they meant with the supplied remote or not at all. It might be possible to make them multi-region compatible by sending a special service code via a Pioneer service remote, a One for All universal learning remote, a Philips Pronto, a Sony Clie, a Palm Pilot or other PDA with Omni Remote, or other means via a standard computer. Good luck.

Just wondering, this RegionDisplay.ISO (DVD move test ISO) -- I can't seem to access the http://xvi.rpc1.org webpage.
Does anyone still have the ISO for testing purposes? I'd like to check the Region Counter of the DVD Player and DVD writer too. Thanks!
