Can you tell me a little more about your setup?

    As an example:

My setup includes a tower PC with a built-in 100MBPS ethernet controller that I have wired into a Netgear wireless router (it has 4 wired ports + 1 uplink port to my cable modem), and my laptop uses a built-in 802.11g WiFi card to connect to the router at 54MBPS.

What exactly is connected to what, and what are you trying to connect where?

Sorry for asking the obvious, but I'd like to help, if I can.

Please post back and let me know, ok mate?

    Cheers!

What I'm thinking is you've got the wrong TCP/IP settings for your desktop.

What are the IP addresses you've assigned, for both computers?

Also, is the 'Client for Microsoft Networks' installed on both systems? And what about 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks', is that enabled on both systems?

Also, be sure they both belong to the same workgroup (nt Domain) but have different Network ID's (computer names).

Post back with your iinfo so we can move ahead, ok?

    Cheers!

'Control Panel>Network Connections>Properties' will get you to 'Client for Microsoft Networks. You should also see your network card and you can check it's status, or try to repair the connection. You can check between the two computers to see if they are set up similarly. The IP address and MAC address should be the only real differences.

Some computers are a little harder to connect, not sure why. Others do it almost automatically when you install the OS. The 'Network Connections' page and the 'Properties' page should have all the information you need.

XP also has a networking guide in 'Help and Support' that is sometimes useful.

An IP address beginning with 169 is a "private" IP address, meaning your computer isn't getting its proper IP address (should be 192.168.xxx.xxx) from the DHCP server in your router. Check to make sure your computer's wireless setup is using the proper WEP/WPA security settings, and make sure you're using the proper keyword on both ends (assuming you're using one). If you can, plug in a standard ethernet cable to make sure that works; if it doesn't, the problem is in your computer. If it does, the problem is in the wireless setup.
