I've a 1.36 GB AVI file with the following specifications:
Average video bitrate -> 1890 Kbps
Audio bitrate -> 192Kbps mp3
Resolution -> 720 X 384
Aspect Ratio -> 4:3
Length -> 1hr 33min 41sec
The above video had been encoded from an MPEG2 video using AutoGK in 100% Target Quality mode, and DivX v6.0 codec.
Note: I don't have this original MPEG2 video with me now. All I've is the 1.36 GB AVI file.
Now, keeping the same resolution, I want to reduce the 1.36GB AVI file to a 700MB file. If I use AutoGK once again, the resolution will be changed(as AutoGK determines a particular calculated resolution during the process of encoding by running a compressibility test for files having a Custom Size)
So, the only method I thought inorder to reduce the filesize, without changing the resolution is:
1.) To open the 1.36 GB AVI file in VirtualDubMod.
2.) Configure the DivX codec settings to reduce bitrate(using the in-built bitrate calculator).
Using bitrate calculator, I found that the bitrate comes out to be 845Kbps(aprrox.).
Now, I'm aware of the fact that reduced bitrate definitely reduces the quality to a certain extent. But, I guess there are certain techniques to improve(or retain) the original quality like:
1.) Multipass, 1st pass encoding
2.) Multipass, Nth pass encoding
I don't know how to use the above two features of the DivX Codec while working with VirtualDubMod. Pls explain the above two encoding techniques so that I can get the best quality despite the reduced bitrate.
To be more specific, pls explain the procedure of Multipass encoding of DivX while working with VirtualDubMod.

You would do the first pass. This creates a stats file. Then run as many Nth passes as you want, each time the stats file is further updated.
Realistically though it will only help to a point and when the bitrate reaches a point you will get better quality by resizing down. ie. the smaller encode when resized back up looks better than the non resized version. -

Where ever you tell it to I would imagine.
The stats file will automatically be updated. -
If you need to reduce it in order to burn onto a CD, you could keep everything the same and just split it and burn to 2 CDs...no quality loss that way.
-
Why not burn as data to a dvd-r?
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
guys, pls give me the answer to my question. the topic is getting deviated.

Do you think it is same as this:
Splitting of larger AVI into smaller AVI.
I don't think so.
If you didn't get my point, let me put forward the issue in a more simpler way:
I've a 1.36 GB AVI file. I want to compress it into a 700MB file using DivX v6.0 codec in VirtualDubMod with the help of Multipass Nth pass encoding method.
I don't know, how to encode an AVI file using Multipass Nth pass encoding technique.
Now, I guess you must atleast be knowing why I wanna use Multipass Nth pass. The reason is simple:
coz, obviously, it gives better quality(even for small filesize i.e., consequently smaller bitrate videos) than single pass encoding.
So, all I wanna know about is the procedural steps of how to proceed with the encoding of an AVI file using Multipass Nth pass encoding technique of DivX codec in VirtualDubMod. -

Besides, you've already started a topic asking about how to use multiple passes :

I humbly bow out of this topic. -
It doesn't take much to say thanks for free help - beggars can't really be choosers
As for your issue, you can in fact use AutoGK - Go into the advanced options, and set the width to Fixed Width and put in 720. Then choose 1 CD (700MB) in the Target size area and it'll do it all for you.If in doubt, Google it.
