  1. 'Scuse the Noob factor.

I had successfully burned DVD data disks on my new burner. It reads well in other machines that have a DVD drive.

Can these be formatted/burned so an older machine that does not have a DVD drive in it can read it? I mean, they're just files. Not DVD movies. Is the CD ROM drive structure completely different and it cannot be done? (My guess.)

    Thanks ahead for your time.

BJ_M told you the answer, but I will elaborate.

On a dvd, the data is written so that the pits on the disc are more dense. This requires a different laser wavelength. A CD- Rom drive does not have the proper equipment to read the data that is burned on a dvd.

  5. best bet in that case, is to go to cdr, if your intending on using them on very old computers...or the other alternitive (im not sure exactly how much data your storing) would be to use an external pen drive or thumb drive, or an external dvd drive (this is also provided that the computers have USB ports)

Thanks you guys to clear this up. Not that I did not feel it in my bones.

I suppose I liked the idea of having 4.7 gigs of stuff with me and be able to load stuff into older machines. Fact is, it's not too bad to use the CDR discs. They fit plenty.

Thanks again, for all the answers.
