  1. I noticed that my symantec said that I have a Trojan virus. My computer was working fine until I moved it to my new apartment. Even then, I did not have internet connection for a few days. I noticed that the Internet Explorer kept popping up with error messages but I figured that its due to the no internet connection so I ignored it. The day the internet came, I noticed that I received a messaged that popped up saying I had a "trojan" virus. The computer was VERY slow. I tried install Grisoft's AVG anti virus software (free one online) but it didnt get rid of the problem. It did detect some viruses and supoposedly removed it. Do I have to reformat my computer? Please someone help!
I do have Norton AntiVirus 2002, but I am afraid that is too old to be effective.
    Thank you

Try that. Its a great free virus scanner and if it says you're clean I'd believe it.

If you still have problems than its probably some spyware. Try running Spybot and Ad-Aware. They are free and the combination of the two should pretty much catch anything you have.

If things are still slow do control, alt delete and click on processes. Look for programs using large amounts of memory and/or CPU cycles. Let us know the names of these programs.

  4. I used Spybot and Adaware. Still didnt do anything. I have Norton Antivirus 2002, but is it too old?
I hope I do not have to reformat my computer. But it doesnt seem like any of these anit virus programs or spyware programs are working

  5. I downloaded "AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.289 " from here.

    http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?qt=anti+virus&tg=dl-20&search.x=24&search.y=18

I ran it and scanned my whole computer, it found some Trojan horses so it put it into the "vault" and I deleted them. Some reason, comp is STILL VERY slow. The internet explorer error message still pops up once every minute. Thisi s where it asks you if you want to send error report or not. Not sure what this means.

    Thanks guys

sounds like you need to either repair system files, or just re-install after a good wipe ...

  9. I ran the antivirus but it seems like it froze halfway. When I try to uninstall it, it says that the "uninstall.isu" is not fully installed so cannot uninstall it. not sure what that means but now I have a program that is halfway installed on my computer. So I then try to go online at www.symantec.com and use the online trail version to scan my comp. It says that I have another version of Norton on my comp so it cannot run (the halfway installed Norton SystemWorks). What can I do? I cant uninstall and I cant scan using the online.

I've alos used Grisoft's AVG and it seemed like it captured 49 trojan viruses and I have deleted them, but my comp is still slow. Does that mean it is hiding and I have to reformat?

    Thanks!

  12. BJ_M,

So you think I wouldnt be able to recover even if I can safely remove the files? I should just reformat?

Also, anyone know what it means when you are trying to install a program (in my case Norton Antivirus) and a strange pop up saying something about windows 16-bit noncompatible and not being able to install? I have had some weird ones talking about 16bit and not letting me install the program.

norton products are not well liked in a lot of companies as they tend to take over your system and are bloatware

  15. man, it seems like this stupid virus is only gonna get removed by reformating, unless someone else has a great idea.
